Jonathan dos Santos could be set for Mexico call-up
The midfielder’s game has improved thanks to the trust of his coach André Jardine.
América midfielder Jonathan dos Santos has managed to improve his game under head coach André Jardine and could be part of the Mexico squad that features in the Nations League.
According to Gibrán Araige of TUDN, ‘Jona’ could be called up by Jaime Lozano for the Nations League to be held in March in the United States. Mexico will play in Dallas, Texas on 21 March against Panama. The winner of that match will play in the final against the winner of the match between the North American team and Jamaica.
Dos Santos has played eight matches this season and in seven he has been a starter with Las Aguilas. He has played 654 minutes of a possible 810 and his form has impressed Lozano. The 33-year-old player would be making a return to the Mexican team after two and a half years away. The last time he played with Mexico was in September 2021 in the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Dos Santos, who has worn the Mexico jersey since 2009, has won 2 CONCACAF Gold Cups (2015 and 2019) and played in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017 and the World Cup in Russia in 2018. He has five goals for his country, the last of which was scored in the match against Honduras on July 21, 2021, in a 2-0 victory in Arizona.
