In the 2021 Guardianes tournament Cruz Azul reached glory and ended their almost 24-year championship drought by defeating Santos Laguna in the two-legged final. Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez, who won the golden boot that campaign, showed up on the big stage and helped the capital team win their ninth league title in franchise history.

Rodríguez could return to the Liga MX

The Uruguay international decided to leave Cruz Azul the following tournament and in 2022 he joined Saudi Arabia club Al-Nassr. Rodríguez signed a two-year contract but he’s been struggling to adapt to the league. The 28-year-old has only scored one goal in eight league appearances in 406 minutes played.

Jonathan Rodríguez is aware that if he wants to be called up to the Uruguay national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, he needs to go to a more competitive league. As the summer transfer window approaches, multiple reports indicate that Los Angeles FC and Club América are keen on signing the striker.

The Liga MX side has approached Rodríguez and they are in pole position to sign him for the upcoming tournament. Club América has started to negotiate with Al-Nassr and they are trying to buy out his contract that expires in 2024 or sign him on a loan deal for the 2022 Apertura tournament that is set to start on 2 July.
