Jordi Alba is to leave LaLiga winners Barcelona at the end of the season, according to various sources in Spain, including radio station Cadena SER. The 34-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Blaugrana side since joining from Valencia in 2012 but has slipped down the pecking order somewhat under Xavi Hernández, with youngster Alejandro Balde now the preferred choice at left-back. Alba has one year left on his Camp Nou contract but has decided the time is right to move on.

What did Jordi Alba win with Barcelona?

Barça signed the defender for a reported fee of €14 million just days before he scored for Spain in their Euro 2012 final thrashing of Italy. Alba won LaLiga in his first season with the club and added a further four league titles, along with 11 other trohpies, including one Champions League triumph in 2014-15. Five Copas del Rey, four Spanish Super Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup make 17 in total. Barça also won the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla in 2015, although Alba wasn’t involved in the match.

Piqué, Busquets, Alba...the end of an era

With two matches of the current campaign remaining, Alba has played a total of 458 games in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring 27 times. Despite Xavi’s return to the dugout, three of the coach’s former teammates have now called time on their career with the Catalans. Gerard Piqué left the club and retired from soccer in November last year, while, like Alba, midfielder Sergio Busquets will move on to pastures new at the end of the season.

There has, as yet, been no indication as to the next step Alba will take. What we do know, however, is that Sunday’s game against Real Mallorca will be the last time he pulls on a Barcelona jersey at Camp Nou.
