Jorge Campos was Mexico’s goalkeeper at three World Cups - USA 1994, France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002. The former international wasn’t too happy with the first list which recently-appointed national team coach Diego Cocca announced last week.

Campos aired his disapproval in comments during the TV Azteca broadcast of the Mazatlán vs Cruz Azul game. When asked by host David Medrano whether he liked the list or not, Campos was emphatic in his reply: “I didn’t like it, because nothing has changed, there was nothing new,” he explained.

Campos did not want to delve any further into the subject, but at the insistence of other colleagues, including Carlos Guerrero, Campos added, “Perhaps we are going to play against France, against the Netherlands, so bring young people, fresh players. That’s why I say that nothing has changed”.

Campos joked that he was “almost the same age” as Guillermo Ochoa, after the veteran Salernitana goalkeeper appeared on the Tricolor list, when new players were expected, “As I say, young players...” he commented.

The TV Azteca analyst was quite critical of the national team environment since before the Qatar World Cup, and feels that the high command of the Mexican Soccer Federation only sees its own interests and does not think of a long-term project for the Tricolor.

Campos also criticized the results in the World Cup and stated that the key lies in giving Mexican soccer a shakeup after the results in Qatar 2022 saw the team hit rock bottom.
