Update:

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham saw red in his side’s LaLiga game against Osasuna, apparently dismissed for comments made to the referee towards the end of the first half.

Los Blancos looked fairly comfortable thanks to an early goal from Kylian Mbappé, and were cruising heading into the break. Bellingham, along with Luka Modric, was protesting against a decision made by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero.

The Englishman’s comments were clearly deemed to be unacceptable and the referee swiftly stopped play, reached to his pocket, and issued Bellingham a straight red.

Despite his all-action style of play, Bellingham has largely avoided red cards during his young career. However he does have one other dismissal during his 252-game career.

When was Bellingham’s first red card?

As was the case against Osasuna, Bellingham’s first red card came as a result of comments made to officials. The incident occurred during a heated 2-2 draw with Valencia last season, a game remembered for Vinicius Jr’s brace at the stadium where he had previously been victim to racist attacks.

Madrid were 2-0 down but fought back to 2-2 and thought they had won it at the death, when Bellingham headed home from close range. However it quickly transpired that referee Gil Manzano had blown for the full-time whistle while the ball was in mid-air, meaning that the goal would not stands.

Bellingham, along with other Madrid players and staff, surrounded the referee and the Englishman was shown the first red card of his career. Speaking after the game, Carlo Ancelotti argued Bellingham had been unlucky to receive his marching orders for the comments.

“Something unprecedented has happened and it’s never happened to me before,” Ancelotti explained. “After the rebound we had possession. It’s never happened to me before and there’s nothing more to add. We were annoyed by Bellingham’s red card because he didn’t say anything insulting. It was frustration.”
