Julián Álvarez on possible Atlético Madrid exit: ‘A transfer is best’
The Argentine striker dropped the bombshell after the match against Austria, saying: “I want to fulfill my dream.”
Julián Álvarez has offered the clearest indication yet that he intends to leave Atlético Madrid this summer, telling reporters that “a transfer is best” for all parties.
The 26-year-old striker spoke after Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria, saying: “The best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”
The Atlético Madrid star was clear about his future and left no room for doubt: “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with people at Atlético Madrid and I think a transfer is best for everyone.”
Signed from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for €75 million, Julián Álvarez has impressed during his two years in the Spanish capital. Earlier this summer Real Madrid reportedly made a bid of €150 million, according to a statement released by the club, but the offer was rejected by Atlético Madrid.
LaLiga rivals Barcelona have also expressed an interest in signing Julián Álvarez, while Premier League champions Arsenal have also been tipped as a potential next destination. Those clubs - and others from around Europe - will have listened carefully to Julián’s comments in Dallas.
Since arriving at Atlético, Julián has played 106 matches, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists. In his first season with the club, he scored 29 goals in 57 appearances and he followed that up with 20 goals in 49 matches in 2025/26.
