Jurgen Klopp wary of Tottenham Hotspur’s quality
The Liverpool boss said that Spurs had been the “best counter-attacking team in Europe” in recent years.
Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his side will need to maintain their good run of form if they are to get a positive result from the visit of Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
Klopp’s side have looked more settled in recent weeks and picked up a third consecutive win with a victory against West Ham United on Wednesday. The Liverpool boss said that he’s optimistic ahead of this weekend’s Anfield fixture.
“I am happy with the performances in the moment as I saw a lot of things we want to see in games, and that’s really pleasing for the coach.”
Spurs picked up a point against Manchester United on Thursday, fighting back from 2-0 down to claim a draw. This week former Spurs player Ryan Mason took over temporary charge of the team following the dismissal of Christian Stellini on Monday.
Klopp said that stopping Tottenham’s attacking threat will be crucial to Liverpool’s performance on Sunday.
“We want to focus on us, but we cannot ignore the quality of the opponent,” Klopp insisted.
“The team they have is still exceptional. Why it didn’t work out for them, I have no idea. They were for years the best counter-attacking team in Europe. I expect them to be really good.”
Liverpool currently sit seventh in the table, seven points adrift of Manchester United in the final Champions League spot. United have played one game fewer but Liverpool have a favourable run of fixtures for the remainder of the season.
After Spurs, Liverpool host Fulham and Brentford before a trip to struggling Leicester City. If they can keep up their recent good run Liverpool have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe’s elite club competition.
“There is always something to improve,” Klopp said, when asked about his side’s prospects for the remainder of the season. “I am absolutely OK with us at the moment, but we have to stay focused and show the most important prize in football is three points.”
