Juventus have 15-point deduction reversed after winning appeal
The Turin club were punished for falsifying financial records but have now had the points deduction reversed by the Italian Olympic Committee.
Italian giants Juventus have had their 15-point deduction reversed after partially winning an appeal, reports on Thursday claimed.
The Italian Olympic Committee, the highest sports court in the country, held a three-hour meeting on Wednesday to hear an appeal from the club. The appeal was partially successful and the club will get the 15 points back, pending another appeal from prosecutors.
Juventus move from seventh in Serie A to third as a result of today’s reversal.
This will have major repercussions for Champions League qualification in Italy, where the top four teams enter the group stages of the Champions’ League. Juventus now leap-frog Inter Milan and AC Milan into third place and into pole position to secure Champions League qualification.
Why were Juventus docked 15 points?
The 36-time Serie A champions were hit with a significant point penalty earlier this year after being charged with false bookkeeping to circumvent league regulations. The Italian club was accused, amongst other things, of altering the valuations of player transfers to inflate their income.
Prosecutors alleged that club officials knowingly falsified financial information and a number of key figures were hit with bans. When the initial ruling was handed down the Juventus board resigned en masse and former president Andrea Agnelli was banned from all soccer activities.
It remains to be seen whether their penalties will be reversed too.
