Karim Benzema begins Al Ittihad exit talks, plans future Real Madrid return
Benzema is unhappy at his current club in Saudi Arabia and could be on the move before the transfer window closes.

Karim Benzema is on the verge of bringing his time at Al Ittihad to an abrupt end, less than three years after arriving as one of the most high-profile signings in Saudi football. The French striker’s contract runs through June 30, but negotiations over an extension have broken down, opening the door to a potential early exit that is already sending shockwaves through the Saudi Pro League.
Why Benzema is unhappy at Al Ittihad
Benzema’s departure is rooted in a clear and escalating disagreement with the club’s ownership over a possible renewal. Sources close to the situation point to unmet promises, assurances that never materialized and unmistakable signals from the club that the relationship had run its course. Those moves have been taken as a personal slight by the former Real Madrid star.
When Benzema arrived in Jeddah, he quickly became more than just another marquee signing. On and off the field, he was positioned as the face of Al Ittihad’s ambitious project, a global icon meant to elevate both sporting results and the club’s international profile.
During his stint with Al Ittihad, Benzema helped restore the club’s competitive edge, playing a central role in a league and cup double during the 2024-25 season. That success, however, has not been enough to bridge the growing divide between player and ownership.
Benzema’s next destination
In December, Benzema told AS that he was open to extending his contract but wanted recognition commensurate with his status and contributions. That acknowledgment, he said, never came. In the same interview, he admitted that the pull of the Champions League anthem still resonated with him and did not rule out a return to Europe.
What once sounded like a distant possibility has now accelerated quickly. Benzema could emerge as one of the most unexpected names of the transfer window’s final stretch.

Al Hilal monitoring the situation
One potential destination already being discussed is Al Hilal, the current leaders of the Saudi league. With Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo drawing interest from European clubs, Al Hilal have reportedly considered Benzema as a high-profile replacement, especially given his strained relationship with Al Ittihad.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Benzema is not expected to feature in Al Ittihad’s league match against Al Najma, a notable absence for a player of his stature.
Benzema targets Real Madrid return
What remains clear is Benzema’s long-term vision. The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner has privately maintained that he sees a return to Real Madrid in a non-playing role once he decides to retire. That moment, however, is not imminent. Benzema’s plan is to continue playing for at least two more seasons before calling time on his career.
For now, his immediate future is uncertain, but one thing is undeniable. Benzema’s next move has the potential to reshape the balance of power in Saudi football and send ripples far beyond it.
