Konaté becomes the summer’s hottest free‑agent prize — and Real Madrid is watching closely

Konaté’s camp state he will not renew with Liverpool and will be a free agent this summer. Real Madrid are following him closely, but have not made any moves yet.

FRANCK FIFE
Madrid. Update:

It looked likely — now it’s certain. Ibrahima Konaté is about to become one of the biggest free‑agent prizes of the summer, if not the prize. He’ll hit the market valued at roughly $54 million, making him the most valuable free agent available anywhere in Europe (ahead of Vlahović at ~$38M and Bernardo Silva at ~$29M).

He’s made a firm decision: he will not renew with Liverpool. That chapter is closed. Now he’s listening to offers.

Real Madrid is monitoring the situation very closely — though the club hasn’t made a move yet and hasn’t decided whether he’s their top choice. But they are looking for a center back… possibly two. And the idea of landing one of them for free is extremely appealing.

From Konaté’s side, everything is already in motion.

A saga that flipped 180 degrees

Just a month ago, Konaté’s renewal with Liverpool was practically done. Everyone — club, agents, even the player — spoke as if the deal was imminent.

On April 19, inside Hill Dickinson Stadium, he told the BBC: “We’ve been talking for a long time and we’re close to an agreement… There’s a big good chance that I’m here next season. It’s what I’ve always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract but but when everything’s gonna be sorted, you can ask to reach out”.

But the situation collapsed. Fast.

New arrivals at Anfield

From England it is suggested his wage demands are too high. That an agreement will not be reached. Looking to the future, the club moved: Jérémy Jacquet signed for €70M and the club also brought in 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni - a youth international with Italy.

So there is already a replacement at Anfield although some feel that the team’s central defence could do with a revamp - Virgil van Dijk isn’t getting any younger, he turns 35 in July. The only other centre-back in the squad, Joe Gomez is out of contract next summer and his fitness has been in question for some time - he visited the sick bay four times last season and he’s not even a starter.

Bayern, Chelsea...

As for Konaté, Bayern and Chelsea are are preparing offers. Italian clubs are circling too — more seriously each week.

And at that same table sits Real Madrid, quiet but present.

For next season, Madrid has:

  • Militão
  • Huijsen
  • Rüdiger (renewal already agreed)

Alaba has gone, so at least one center back must be signed. Possibly two.

One center back or two? Mourinho will decide

The key variable is Asencio. Madrid must decide whether to keep him or move him — a decision that will be made by the incoming coach, almost certainly José Mourinho barring a shock in next Sunday’s elections.

Once Mourinho gives his verdict, Madrid will know whether they need one center back… or two - and whether Konaté is the kind of profile he is looking for.

Konaté’s profile: a warrior, not a stylist

Konaté would arrive for free, but convincing him is the challenge. It would be a direct negotiation with the player, who would also command a signing on fee.

His résumé:

  • 4,280 minutes this season (third‑most at Liverpool)
  • French international, competing with Upamecano to partner Saliba
  • 27 years old
  • Right‑footed
  • 6′4″ (1.94m)
  • Physically dominant, more destroyer than ball‑playing defender
  • Market value: $54M

Konaté will be one of the biggest free‑agent opportunities of the summer. And Real Madrid is still watching.
