Kylian Mbappé takes steps to protect name, pose and quotes

The French football megastar Kylian Mbappé is expecting to be officially named as a Real Madrid player very soon and has reports are that he has recently requested the protection of his surname and his customary crossed-arm pose used for celebrating goals. He wants this in place to operate commercially across a wide range of sectors in the market comprising the 27 countries of the European Union.

What has Mbappé trademarked?

The request was formalised on 8 February through a Parisian law firm before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). This continental agency, headquartered in Alicante, has previously protected seven trademarks of the Paris Saint-Germain player, primarily including his name and surname in various arrangements, as well as his initials. However, the footballer is now seeking to reserve the use of a new trademark solely consisting of the term ‘Mbappé’.

Although he had also protected his well-known goal celebration with a figure in black, white, and gray, showing him frozen in motion with a smiling pose, crossed arms, and hands in the armpits, he now aims to reserve another identical design but entirely in black, except for his arms and hands with raised thumbs, which stand out in white.

Mbappé, highly aware of the benefits of intellectual property, aims to ensure potential commercial use in diverse areas such as cosmetics, toothpaste, perfumery, diving suits, jewelry, binding material, umbrellas, bags, and travel items. This also includes home textiles, clothing, footwear, toys, video games, and even Christmas tree ornaments, through eight of the categories outlined in the Nice Classification, which regulates products and services eligible for trademark registration.

Mbappé's protected words take him beyond Ronaldo and Messi

In addition to his name, surname, and the image of his goal celebrations, Mbappé has registered with the EUIPO two of his most memorable quotes.

“Moi tu m’parles pas d’age” (Don’t talk to me about age) and “Le football il a changé” (Football has changed) are both protected, as well as a drawing featuring the logo of one of the charitable activities in which he is one of the prominent figures, “We care for all”.

With these trademarks, Mbappé, one of the highest-paid footballers on the planet who has announced that he will not continue at PSG next season, surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo, who has six protected trademarks, and Lionel Messi, with four. This places him at the forefront of a list that also includes Vinicius Jr. with three, as well as Mané, Gareth Bale, Sané, and Depay.
