LAFC chief: “Omar Campos is an incredibly talented left-back”
The 2022 MLS Cup champions announced the signing of the Mexican defender from Santos Laguna.
Los Angeles FC continue to strengthen ahead of the start of the 2024 Major League Soccer season. On Tuesday they announced the signing of Omar Campos from Santos Laguna, who has signed a deal until 2027. The 2022 MLS Cup champions closed the deal for just over $5 million plus add-ons.
Strengthening LAFC defence
“Omar is an incredibly talented left-back with incredible potential and vast experience in Liga MX despite his young age,” LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington said.
“Omar is a fantastic addition to our strong group of defenders, and we are confident this move to LAFC will be a positive one for Omar and our club in our pursuit of more trophies. I would also like to thank Santos and the Orlegi group for their cooperation throughout the process.”
The left-back made his Liga MX debut at age 18 in Santos Laguna’s 2-0 victory over Tigres UANL on January 18, 2021. Campos spent three years with the first team scoring eight goals and registering three assists in 114 appearances in all competitions.
The Mexican defender comes to replace Diego Palacios, who moved to Corinthians in Brazil at the beginning of January. Campos has gained experience in different competitions having played 17 league games in Mexico and two in the Concacaf Champions League.
On December 17 he made his debut with the Mexican national team in the friendly against Colombia. Campos will join the preseason with the rest of his team-mates when he receives his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and his P-1 Visa and will occupy an international position on the roster.
