Los Angeles FC have announced the signing of Gareth Bale, who is to join the MLS franchise as a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Real Madrid. In a statement, LAFC said the forward is to sign a 12-month contract at Banc of California Stadium, with the option to extend his deal until 2024.

Bale’s arrival remains subject to “the receipt of his P1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate”, LAFC said. The franchise also confirmed that they have paid Inter Miami $75,000 to sign Bale, because the David Beckham-owned team had previously acquired so-called ‘discovery rights’ to the 32-year-old.

Discovery rights, discovery list - what are they?

According to MLS rules, teams can add certain transfer targets - typically foreigners based in overseas leagues - to a ‘discovery list’ of up to seven players. This allows the franchise to claim priority if they want to purchase the player at a future date. If another team wishes to sign him, they must pay a fee to the franchise with the discovery rights. You’ll find a more in-depth explanation on the MLS website.

Bale “extremely excited” about LAFC switch

I am extremely excited for this move to LAFC,” Bale said. “This is the right place for me and my family and the right time in my career, and I cannot wait to get started working with the team and getting ready to win more trophies in Los Angeles.”

LAFC general manager John Thorrington said: “Gareth is one of the most dynamic and exciting players of his generation. Adding a player who brings his talent and experience at the highest levels is an incredible opportunity to improve our club. I am grateful to Gareth’s management team who helped make this happen.

“It is clear that Gareth is highly motivated to continue to win trophies and we are elated that he has made the choice to join LAFC and help lead us in our ultimate goal of winning championships.”

Bale gearing up for World Cup

Bale moves to Los Angeles after nine years at Real Madrid, where he scored 106 goals in 258 appearances, and amassed a trophy haul that includes five Champions Leagues and three LaLiga titles. The Wales captain, who has also played for Tottenham and Southampton, is preparing to lead his country at the World Cup later this year, after the Dragons reached the finals for the first time since 1958.

When could Bale make his LAFC debut?

LAFC cannot register Bale until the MLS’ ‘secondary transfer window’ opens on 7 July, so the earliest he will be available to play for the Black and Gold is their city derby against Los Angeles Galaxy on 8 July. Steve Cherondolo’s men, who sit top of the Western Conference, then face Nashville SC on 17 July.
