Update:
LAFC - Houston Dynamo: how to watch
ALLISON DINNEREFE

LAFC host Houston Dynamo on Saturday evening for a place in the 2023 MLS Cup.

Both teams have impressed this season and boast a potent mix of exuberant talent and top-level experience in their squads. LAFC have been led by MLS Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga this season, who’s 37 goals in all competitions puts his just one goal shy of the all-time MLS record.

For Houston the big star this season has been Hector Herrera, the former Atletico Madrid midfielder who joined midway through the 2022 campaign. He struggled initially but Herrera has shown his class under Ben Olsen this year and has contributed 19 assists from midfield.

Bouanga and Herrera have been two of the best players in MLS this season and either could easily be the match-winner in the Western Conference final.

LAFC - Houston Dynamo prediction

The Western Conference final looks perfectly balanced, despite each team taking very different routes to make it to this stage. Steve Cherundolo’s LAFC are the reigning MLS Cup holders and can call upon the league’s most prolific marksman to help them retain the title. For Houston, this was supposed to be a season of renewal and gradual progress under new boss Ben Olsen. But they have exceeded pre-season expectations and will provide stern opposition for LAFC.

Houston have already gone to penalties twice in this season’s MLS Cup Playoffs. We think they’ll do the same on Saturday, but the Dynamo’s luck may be about to run out.

Prediction: LAFC 1-1 Houston Dynamo (LAFC to win on pens)
