Landon Donovan and the United States remember the top memories against Mexico ahead of the friendly match
The United States and Landon Donovan looked back on their best moments of the rivalry with Mexico.
Next Wednesday, April 19, the United States will play against Mexico in a friendly match in yet another edition of the Concacaf Clásico, given the fact that these two sides are the giants within the region.
Despite being an unofficial match that falls outside of a FIFA registered date, the US team have decided to warm up for the clash by remembering back to the 2007 Gold Cup and using one of the historical nemeses of the Mexican team, goal-machine Landon Donovan.
In the video, Donovan commentates over the penalty which he put past Oswaldo Sánchez to bring the game back to 1-1, a result which Benny Feilhaber would later turn into a victory for the Stars and Stripes.
‘The biggest game outside of a World Cup’
“It’s such a mind game; I know he’s watched every penalty I’ve hit. You’ve got to depend on your mind and make a quick processing decision. In the moment I got there it just felt right to hit it to my right and he stayed so, he’d clearly done his homework. When you play a Gold Cup final to me it feels like the biggest game outside of a World Cup game. Everywhere they played us was still a home game for them, so, to beat them there in front of all their fans, it was awesome. We know that that’s a huge moment, we can feel it.”
“Just like the growth potential in a World Cup match is huge, these are all huge moments and we all felt it. I think we all understood that this is an important moment in US soccer.” The top scorer for the United States, tied with Clint Dempsey, on 57 goals, said that “we need to continue to at least compete with if not beat Mexico in games like this. Needless to say we were always up for it”.
