Lazio - Bayern Munich summary: score, goals, highlights | Champions League
Lazio - Bayern Munich: Live blog
Lazio earned themselves a 1-0 first leg lead after stunning Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Bayern enjoyed the lion's share of the ball and fashioned some presentable early chances, but failed to push home their advantage. The German champions looked tidy but devoid of a spark, their forwards unable to provoke a breakthrough in a tight game.
Bayern defender Dayot Upamecao, however, managed to do exactly that. His clumsy challenge on Gustav Isaksen resulted in a red card and a penalty kick for Lazio. Ciro Immobile made no mistake from the spot.
Although there was 20 minutes still to play, Lazio opted against pushing forward against ten-man Bayern and decided instead to preserve their one-goal lead.
Time will tell if that was the correct decision, but it was enough to earn Lazio a famous victory over one of European soccer's true giants.
Valentine's Day card for Upamecano
The defining moment of this game was Dayot Upamecano's decision to lunge in on Gustav Isaksen in the penalty box. Lazio won a penalty. Upamecano received a red card. Ciro Immobile coolly slotted home the only goal of the game.
It was an unfortunate moment for the Frenchman and won that puts him in a select group of players with a Valentine's Day dismissal.
Peeep peeeeep peeeeeeeep

It's well defended and Lazio win the goal kick.
That nearly was a second for Lazio!
More good work from Anderson to take his side forward and make space for a shot from Castellanos. He curled in a shot from just inside the box but Neuer was equal to it.
There's a bit of a disconnect between Lazio's players and fans here.
Whenever they win the ball back the crowd urges them forward, but the team seem fairly happy with the one-goal lead.
There will be a minimum of five minutes of added time at the end of the second half.
Lazio should double their lead!
Huge chance for the hosts on the break! The ball was worked through to Felipe Anderson on the right of the box. He had a clear sight of goal but took an extra touch and allowed the Bayern defence time to get back and block his route.
He should have done better there.
The corner is whipped in but easily claimed by Provedel.
Tel does well for Bayern on the right and curls in a dangerous cross. Choupo-Moting tries to connect but can't get it on target. Bayern with a corner kick.
It's Kane who steps up but he slips as he takes the kick. His shot clips the top of the wall and spins out for a Bayern corner kick.
The ball is whipped in but easily cleared by Lazio.
There could be a chance for Kane here, though.
The Bayern striker was clipped on the edge of the box and wins a free kick for his team. It's about 25 yards out, slightly right of centre.
Bayern fire the ball forward to Harry Kane but the Englishman can't control it. He's starting to look tired.
In truth, he hasn't looked particularly sharp for much of this game.
More good work from Guendouzi to pinch the ball on the halfway line and surge forwards.
We're into the last ten minutes now and it looks like Lazio are content with a one-goal lead here. The home crowd are urging them on but Bayern are continuing to dominate the ball.
Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane are replaced. Eric Choupo-Moting and Matthys Tel enter.
The Lazio defender is substituted.

Gila goes after getting a whack to the head. It looks like he'll need to be replaced.
Mazraoui tries to connect with a long diagonal on the right but can't quite bring the ball under control. Lazio win the goal kick.
Lazio have a decision to make now.
They have the lead and should be able to see this game out against ten men. But this is only the first leg and they must go to Munich for the second leg.
Can they push forward now and take advantage of a vulnerable Bayern side? Should they risk losing their lead to increase it?
And there's changes for Lazio.
Isaksen and Immobile come off, Pedro Rodriguez and Taty Castellanos replace them.
Change for Bayern as Goretzka comes off, De Ligt enters the game.
Incredible scenes in the Stadio Olimpico as the Roman crowd celebrates the lead against Bayern Munich.
The goal came from a brilliant counter-attack from Lazio that left the Bayern backline looking very exposed. It looked like the chance had gone when Immobile was dispossessed but the ball fell to Isaksen in the box.
Upamecano lunged in and planted his stud on Isaksen's boot, giving away a penalty and earning the Frenchman a red card. Immobile slotted home from the spot.
Immobile give Lazio the lead!
Ciro Immobile steps up and coolly slots the ball past Neuer!
Pandemonium in Rome!
Chaotic scenes at the Stadio Olimpico. Penalty to the hosts, Immobile to take it...

And it's a red card for Upamecano! The Bayern man is dismissed for the challenge, a mistimed stamp on Isaksen.
It's all happening now!
Penalty to Lazio!
Lightening break from Lazio. Clumsy tackle from Upamecano. Penalty to Lazio!
Big chance for Mazraoui!
Finally, Bayern Munich show their class and build up well down the right. There's neat interplay from Muller and Kane to send Mazraoui racing through on goal.
It looks like the full back will break the deadlock but Guendouzi does brilliantly to get back at block the chance.
Good play all round.
More wasteful passing from Bayern Munich and Musiala punts the ball out of play. Bayern have looked solid enough in possession but their attempts to break lines and force the issue have not been successful.
Careless pass from Harry Kane but Bayern quickly win back the ball. Kane tries to sweep the ball out to Musiala but it's intercepted again.
It's not been the Englishman's night so far.
Confirmation that Hysaj will not be able to continue. Manuel Lazzari comes in on his place.
It looks like we'll be seeing a Lazio change. Defender Hysaj is down holding his ankle and has just gestured across to the bench.
This substitution will be imminent.
Muller breaks clear down the right and hooks a looping cross into the Lazio box. Kane gets his head on the ball but can't direct the header.
There are a number of Bayern substitutes warming up on the touchline. Thomas Tuchel cannot be too pleased with how the second half has started.
Bayern are knocking the ball around the midfield to a chorus of boos from the home crowd.
Lazio clear the corner kick and Bayern are forced to go all the way back to Neuer.
Kane tries to clip the ball over the top towards Sane but Lazio head away easily.
Bayern do well to get Muller around the backline on the right. Lazio get players back and clear for a corner kick.

Lazio go short with the corner before Alberto whips it in from the angle. Kane heads clear and Bayern are back on the offensive.
Luis Alberto's corner kick is clearly by Kim Jae and the hosts have another corner kick.
Another powerful run from Lazio, this time from Anderson, who wins a corner kick for his team.
Incredible noise inside the Stadio Olimpico now!
Massive chance for Lazio!
Good strength from Luis Alberto to hold off two challenges and feed the ball through to Isaksen. He was one-on-one with Neuer but the Bayern keeper stayed big and made the save.
A let-off for Bayern.
And we're back!
Lazio get the second half underway...
Bayern's drought continues
Ok, maybe a game and a half doesn't exactly constitute a 'drought', but it's been a strangely dry spell for Bayern. Can they find a breakthrough in the second half?
So, who's been the better team?
As the scores would suggest, it's been a fairly even opening 45 minutes. Bayern Munich have, predictably, dominated the ball and forced a few half chances. Sane came close from a free kick and Musiala had a good chance from close range that he should have hit the target with.
The visitors have pushed Lazio back and reduced their time on the ball but the Italian side have stood up fairly well to the pressure. They have been pinned back for most of the first half but managed to fashion a few half chances after strong runs from Isaksen and Immobile.
Goalless in the Champions League
We've had plenty of excitement in the opening 45 minutes but no goals from either of the Champions League Round of 16 fixtures. Bayern Munich have made the most chances but Lazio have shown their quality at points, managing to cause problems for Bayern's high line.
Peep peeeep peeeeeeep
And that's all we have time for in the first half.
All square at the break. Bayern have been on top, but Lazio may well the happier with that goalless first half.
Swift break from Lazio nearly catches Bayern out. Isaksen and Guendouzi combine on the right to make space for a shot. Guendouzi's effort is blocked by Kim Jae in the heart of defence.
Brilliant defending from Upamecano to win the ball off Felipe Anderson on the left.
We're into the final minutes of normal time in the first half, can Bayern force the breakthrough?

Lazio enjoy a brief foray forward but Bayern win the ball back swiftly and are back on the attack.
Musiala fires over!
There's another opening for Bayern, this time it's Jamal Musiala showing neat footwork in the box. He is one-on-one with Provedel but skies his effort from close range.
Mix-up at the back for Lazio
Nearly calamity as Lazio goalkeeper Provedel tries to play out from the back but his pass is intercepted by Kimmich. He pokes the ball forward to Kane in the box but the linesman's flag is up.
A narrow escape for Lazio.
Good work from Isaksen to cut inside from the right flank. The Lazio forward works some space on his left and takes aim but the shot is comfortably over the crossbar.
Frantic defending from Lazio as the ball is fired across their box, narrowly evading Harry Kane in the middle. Musiala recovers and looks to charge back into the box, but Lazio but Guendouzi manages to get the ball clear.
Luis Alberto manages to ease the pressure for his side with a strong run down the left. Harry Kane get back to block the advance but he only succeeds in giving away a throw in.
Lazio are standing strong but they have offered less attacking threat in the past 10 minutes, increasingly pinned back in their own half.
Leroy Sane so close to a breakthrough
Kane stepped over the free kick and, after a neat shifting of the ball, Leroy Sane charged onto it and fired agonisingly wide of the top corner.
That was the closest Bayern have come.
It looks like it is Harry Kane to take it...
Free kick to Bayern!
Goretzka is felled right on the edge of the Lazio box. Bayern have a golden chance to hit the ball; 25 yards from goal, slightly right of central.
And just to emphasise that point. Dayot Upamecano steps onto the ball 30 yards from goal and fires high over the crossbar from range.
Leroy Sane has had a couple of opportunities to create something from the right, but he's not been able to get past his man and get into the box. That's been the problem for Bayern so far, they are struggling to penetrate this Lazio backline.
The Lazio Ultras certainly seem content with how the opening 25 minutes have gone.
The hosts have largely kept Bayern at arms length and have enjoyed a reasonable amount of the possession. Guendouzi has been industrious in the middle and has shown his talents on the ball.
Kimmich does well to dispossess Isaksen and send Bayern back on the offensive. Mazraoui wins a throw in for his team on the right.
Kim Jae clips the ball over the top towards Thomas Muller, who goes down under pressure from Romagnoli. Muller wants a free kick but the ball is pulled back for an offside.

A good effort form the Lazio No. 10.

Bayern have dominated the possession in the opening 15 minutes but they have not managed to create many clear cut chances. Mauricio Sarri will probably be fairly content with how his Lazio side have begun.
Immobile is dispossessed in his own half and goes down demanding a free kick. The referee waves away the protests and there is outrage in the stands as Bayern look to mount an attack.
The hosts do well to win the ball back and avert danger.
Leroy Sane looks to make progress down the right but Hyasi does well to block him off and win the goal kick for his team.
Ten minutes into the game and the home support has been a constant factor in the background, roaring their team on. This is a rare knockout fixture for Lazio in the Champions League, their fanbase are clearly going to enjoy themselves.
Musiala does well to skip through the challenges from the left and win a corner kick for his side. Bayern Munich swing the ball to the back post but Kane can only head the ball wide.
Free kick to Lazio after Luis Alberto is felled in the midfield. Clumsy challenge from Upamecano, deserved foul.
Thomas Muller has done well in the opening stages to link the play. He's drifting out wide and allowing Kane to stay away from the build-up phase.
Another chance for Bayern!
The visitors are back on the ball and fire a diagonal out to Muller on the right. His first-time pass across the box finds Kane in space in the middle but the Englishman can't control his shot.
A clear chance for Kane.

Chance! Bayern Munich could be ahead.
Sane found the ball in space on the right and pulled it back to Goretzka on the edge of the box. The German midfielder had a free shot on goal but fired wide.
It's a proactive start for Bayern Munich who are looking to press from the start. Harry Kane looks pumped up for the visitors and does well to feed the ball to Leroy Sane early on.
And we're off!
Bayern Munich get us underway in this Champions League clash. Away we go!
'The Championssssss'
The famous Champions League anthem rolls around the Olimpico Stadium ahead of kick-off. The tune comes to a rousing cresendo as the Roman crowd screams 'The Champions' to finish it off.
We could be in for a good one.
The teams are in the tunnel at Stadio Olimpico and there is real anticipation for this Champions League Round of 16 tie. Bayern Munich go into the matchup as favourites but they have been far-from-imperious this season and Lazio will fancy their chances of pulling off a shock.
Lazio - Bayern Munich: The teams
Here's another look at the two starting XIs, with thanks to our friends at Sofascore for the graphic.
Lazio are able to name a full-strength side with Ciro Immobile leading the line. It looks as though Bayern are reverting to a back four after switching to a 5-3-2 against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.
Incredible atmosphere in Rome for Champions League clash
You would expect nothing less, but the atmosphere in Lazio's Stadio Olimpico is really something special for this Champions League clash. The Italian side are looking to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 1999/2000, the only time they have made it to the final eight of the competition.
One to watch: Jamal Musiala
Bayern Munich are looking to make it 12 Bundesliga titles in a row this season. The man who clinched their 11th was young midfielder Jamal Musiala, who scored a last-minute winner in Bayern's final game of 2022/23 to secure the title.
This year he's struggled a little to recapture the thrilling heights of his breakthrough season. Harry Kane's tendency to drop deep and build the play has robbed Musiala of the space he needs to operate. However Musiala is still a generational talent and one that could prove to be a key player for Bayern Munich going forward. The team is looking for a statement performance after last weekend's loss and Musiala could be the man to provide it.
Kimmich back for full-strength Bayern
Joshua Kimmich returns to the starting XI for tonight's Champions League clash and will be out to show Thomas Tuchel the error of his ways. Kimmich has been a key player with Bayern for nearly a decade and his versatility has allowed previous iterations of this team to play a more fluid style.
We're expecting him to start as a conventional midfielder, alongside Leon Goretzka, but don't be surprised if Kimmich starts as a full back and then drifts inside.
One to watch: Ciro Immobile
Lazio's Ciro Immobile is the talisman for Mauricio Sarri's side and a player with real experience. He has won the European Championships with Italy and have been a key player in Rome since arriving in 2016.
The 33-year-old has scored more than 200 goals for Lazio and have proved himself to be particularly lethal in the Champions League. He has played in the competition just 11 times for Lazio, but has recorded a deeply impressive eight goals. If Lazio are to pull of a shock, Immobile will likely have to add to that tally over the two legs.
Bayern Munich continue to dominate in UCL
Twelve minutes. That's how much of their 540 minutes of Champions League action that Bayern Munich have spent on the losing side. Only Real Sociedad, also in action tonight against Paris Saint Germain, have trailed for less time.
Bayern focused on bouncing back
There's a distinct lack of jollity in the Bayern Munich ranks. The perennial German champions are expected to win the title every year but a chastening loss to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend has put their supremacy at risk.
Thomas Tuchel has demanded improvement from his side and they have the chance to show progression today. Nothing less than a win will help to ease the pressure on Tuchel and convince the club hierarchy that this team are moving in the right direction.
What formation will Bayern Munich play?
Unsurprisingly, Thomas Tuchel has made changes after his side's 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. Recent defensive addition Eric Dier has been dropped from the starting XI, Joshua Kimmich comes in to reinforce the midfield options.
Bayern played a 3-5-2 formation in the Bayer loss but it looks like they are reverting to a back four to take on Lazio. Kimmich will play alongside Leon Goretska in midfield, Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min Jae will begin as a defensive pairing.
And the Lazio starting XI...
It's a full-strength team for Mauricio Sarri tonight as his side look to shock one of the giants of European soccer. Only one change from last weekend's victory of Cagliari, Danilo Cataldi is replaced in midfield by Matias Vecino.
Here's the Bayern Munich lineup...
No major surprises for Bayern Munich. The German champions start with Harry Kane leading the line, aided in his offensive duties by Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller and Jamal Musiala. Quite the attacking quartet for Thomas Tuchel!
Mauricio Sarri confident of upsetting the odds
"If we start from the assumption that it’s impossible, it’s a game we’ve already lost. We have to go with confidence, with enthusiasm, we have to try at all costs, a good push without having second thoughts. On paper they are favourites, we’ll see what the pitch says.
"We all have to suffer together, as a collective. There will be difficulties to face and overcome, this is inevitable when teams are of this caliber. We have to do the complete opposite compared to the match against Inter, when we were at the mercy of events. Tomorrow, however, events must be faced."
The Eagles have landed!
The hosts arrive at Stadio Olimpico for tonight's game, where they will be looking to cause an upset against Bayern Munich. Mauricio Sarri's side secured a 3-1 win against Cagliari last weekend but face a very different proposition today.
Tuchel promises Bayern improvement
"It was rare for Harry [Kane] to have so few touches [against Leverkusen]. The formation was actually thought of with him in mind, but we didn’t find him at all. We want to get Harry in the game more, and we need to fix it.
"I’m convinced we can show a reaction [against Lazio]. It wasn’t good enough in Leverkusen. But it’s a new opponent, a new competition. I hope we can make up for it.
Today's Champions League fixtures
We have two thrilling fixtures from the Champions League tonight, two games that provide a real contrast of style in addition to a myriad of talented players on show. Right here, we'll been focusing on the encounter at the Stadio Olimpico, where Lazio host Bayern Munich.
Bayern will be the favourites, but the Italian side play some neat stuff under head coach Mauricio Sarri and will benefit from an electric home crowd.
Finally, after a long, cold winter break, the Champions League is back with a slate of fascinating knockout ties. The real work starts now for the teams involved in the Round of 16, a series of two-legged ties.

Bayern return to Champions League action after Bayer hammering
Every year Bayern Munich go into the season as favourites to lift the Bundesliga title and for the last 11 years they have done so. But that incredible spell of dominance looks in real danger after last weekend's demolition at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen, managed by former Bayern player Xabi Alonso, are now five points clear at the top of the table and are yet to lose a game this season.
Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel will be demanding a much-improved performance against Lazio.
