Just when it seemed clear that Leny Yoro would wear the Real Madrid shirt for the upcoming season, the situation took an unexpected turn of events.

The Spanish capital was expected to be the destination for the 18-year-old Lille defender, who was set to replace Nacho at Madrid and reinforce the team as another talented youngster. However, despite all things pointing to the player being close to joining Real Madrid, the Frenchman’s future looks set to be as a Red Devil.

How much are Manchester United paying for Leny Yoro? Contract details

Manchester United’s interest in Leny Yoro comes as no surprise. Coach Erik Ten Hag knew that signing a center-back was a priority for the team after Raphaël Varane announced his departure from the club at the end of last season.

Leny Yoro will sign a five-year deal with Manchester United until 2029, and the club has the option to extend his contract for a further year. What’s more, the player will earn a salary of $9.8 million per season.

Despite knowing of the defender’s preference in joining join Real Madrid, the English club kept pushing for Yoro’s transfer, and Lille were not willing to risk losing him as a free agent next summer. As such, the defender decided on Tuesday night that he would join Manchester United and is on his way to England’s northwest to complete his medical tests; the official announcement is simply a matter of time.

What is Leny Yoro’s record at Lille?

Yoro is considered to be a generational talent. He was an outstanding player for his club last season, playing Lille’s 32 of the 34 league games and scoring two goals. During his two seasons with the French club, Leny Yoro played 60 matches and was on the starting XI in 50 of them.

Why didn’t Leny Yoro go to Real Madrid?

The main reason for Yoro’s failed transfer to Real Madrid is regarding the fee given by Lille. Although Real Madrid need a center-back, their offer didn’t go over $43 million, a number that was not big enough for the French club, considering the defender’s importance in the squad.

Conversely, Manchester United were willing to spend big on the player. As revealed by The Athletic, Lille agreed to an initial fee of $67.9 million with Manchester United last week.

The English club are, if reports are to be believed, still keeping a close eye on Matthijs de Ligt, a name heavily linked with the Premier League club, in case something extraordinary happens and the Yoro transfer falls through in its final stages, something which is very unlikely at this point.
