One of the biggest surprises of the week at Inter Miami came on Thursday when it was announced that Leo Campana, the franchise’s second-top scorer of all time, is moving on.

The Ecuadorian striker has joined the New England Revolution in a record-breaking deal - $2.5 million guaranteed, plus with an additional $750,000 in conditional General Allocation Money (GAM).

If Campana meets the outlined performance-related criteria, the fee will rise to $3.25 million, making him the most expensive transfer in MLS history.

The previous trade record was set in January 2022 when FC Dallas paid DC United $2 million plus $300,000 in conditional GAM for winger Paul Arriola.

The move fees up a designated player spot for Inter Miami which will allow Javier Mascherano to strengthen his team ahead of the new campaign.

“Thanks for everything, goalscorer,” Inter Miami wrote on X, followed by a video of Campana’s best moments during his time at the club. His new team New England, replied: “We will take good care of him.”

In September, the 24-year-old https://en.as.com/soccer/leonardo-campana-becomes-inter-miamis-all-time-top-goal-scorer-n/, edging past Gonzalo Higuaín. His reign lasted little more than a month, when he was overtaken by Lionel Messi.

Leo Campana’s farewell message to Inter Miami

Campana made a total of 100 appearances for the Herons, scoring 32 goals and serving eight assists. He leaves as the team' second top scorer and more importantly, with a good reputation, because despite falling down the order following Luis Suárez’s arrival, he always fulfilled his role when Gerardo Martino required him.

Campana said goodbye to Miami with a post on Instagram:

“Today is the day I say goodbye to Inter Miami. It has been three incredible years in which I have been very happy. I have had the privilege of sharing the field with people I never imagined I would share it with, especially with the best player of all time [Messi].

“I would like to thank each and every one of the people who are part of this institution and outside of it who made Miami feel like home. Thanks to the leaders, medical staff, media people, kit men, the two coaching teams I worked under who made me grow as a professional and as a person and especially to all my teammates with whom I had the opportunity to play. Thank you for everything!”
