León has been crowned the best team in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League. The victory over Carlos Vela’s LAFC represented the first international title in the history of the club from the capital of Guanajuato. On the other hand, the Los Angeles team lost its second final in three years, defeated in 2020 by Tigres.

On Sunday something more was at stake than football hegemony in the North, Central America and the Caribbean region. With the reform adopted by FIFA to make the Club World Cup a more attractive event, in 2025 a tournament more similar to the international World Cup will be played with 32 participants involved and repeated every four years.

The qualifying system is through the respective continental tournaments, with the year 2021 as the starting point, and in this line, Monterrey and León are the confirmed participants of Liga MX and CONCACAF. Los Rayados won the 2021 final against América, and with the victory over LAFC, León also secured his ticket.

Seattle Sounders, last year’s winner, is CONCACAF’s third invitee. Next year’s tournament will be the last chance for a Mexican or other team to attend the international tournament. In the coming days we’ll find out if Manchester City or Inter Milan are added to the list.
