Lewandowski breaks World Cup curse

In Poland’s 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski finally got his first World Cup goal as they moved to the top of Group C.

Update:

The curse has been broken! Robert Lewandowski, at 34 years old and playing in his fifth World Cup, has finally scored a goal in the tournament in Qatar. With more than 600 career goals to his name and 76 (now 77) international goals, Lewandowski had never managed to score a goal at the World Cup.

Poland fans go wild as Lewandowski breaks curse

Lewandowski is one of the best Polish players the country has ever seen and to watch him score a much-deserved World Cup goal before the end of his career was a meaningful moment for his fans.

He’s an inspiration for the whole team,” said a Polish fan after the game. “Seeing his performances for Barcelona and Bayern Munich, it invigorates us.”

“He once gave an interview on how Polish kids are not used to being the best. They’re alway thrown to the side. Seeing this, seeing his performance…being able to be there for his first World Cup goal means the world to me.

Poland takes Group C lead

Going into the match, Saudi Arabia was leading Group C after their big upset over Argentina. Poland had just drew 0-0 against Mexico. When they came into the game, Saudi Arabia had hopes of becoming just the second national team in World Cup history to advance to the next round.

Those hopes were dashed when a first goal from Piotr Zielinski was followed by a second by Robert Lewandowski, which sealed the victory for Poland and broke his World Cup curse.

That victory put Poland at the top of Group C, with Saudi Arabia in second, Mexico in third, and Argentina in last. No matter what happens, Poland only have to score one point against Argentina on Wednesday in order to advance to the round of 16.

“Finally. We’ve waited for a decade plus, so it’s finally in,” said a Polish fan. “We’re looking forward to him scoring more against Argentina, hopefully.”
