Lewandowski: “Now I understand the meaning of més que un Club”

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski spoke ahead of his return against Athletic this weekend and opened up about his future with the team.

When Robert Lewandowski made his move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona this summer, there were definitely some doubters. He’s already 34, Barcelona is in the middle of a rebuild...how much can he really do?

The doubters have been silenced. Lewy is now La Liga’s top goalscorer with 15 goals, plus has five assists across 20 games. This, despite missing a few games for an injury and a few for getting a red card. Speaking of the injury, Lewy should be back this weekend when Barça plays Athletic at San Mamés as they fight for the top spot in La Liga.

“In La Liga, we have a good lead, but we have to do better than in many games, where we have won 1-0,” said Lewandowski. “In the Copa, the objective is the final, but we have to eliminate Real Madrid.”

Lewandowski helps Barcelona with more than just goals

Lewandowski’s influence on the field is obvious in goals scored, but he helps with much more than that. As an experienced player, he helps the younger guys on the team become better players and people.

I try to help my teammates not only with goals, but also with my behavior and my mentality, giving them my point of view of the games,” said Lewandowski. “I see that the young players not only work on the field, but also in the mentality, which is amazing.”

Lewy believes the potential of the young players provides a bright future for Barça, who is still in the process of rebuilding. He also mentioned the importance of adjusting the game to the players and the current climate of the team.

“It’s important that there is a balance in a team between young players and older players and we have that,” he said. “The Barça DNA is to play good football, but you have to understand that football is changing. For example, the way Barça played ten years ago might not work now. You have to find the perfect solution for where you are and the players you have”.

Lewy’s future with Barcelona

Lewandowski’s contract with Barcelona ends in 2026, but the Polish striker said he hopes to spend many more years with the club, saying that he feels content and comforable there.

“Now I don’t think about it because I know I can still play at a high level for a few more years. How many will they be? We’ll see. I’m sure it’s not one or two, it’ll be more. It would be great if it was as long as possible,” said Lewandowski.

Now I understand and I saw that Barcelona is “més que un club”, and before I didn’t know what it meant. But when you’re in it and you see everything, how it works, how people take care of you, you understand exactly what it means.”
