Liam Gallagher says he’s ready to perform Wonderwall on pitch if England make it to final
England are on to the quarterfinal and looking to finally break a 60 drought without a World Cup and if they break the drought the celebration will be epic
It’s coming home has been the battle cry for Three Lions fans for the last half century, but during this World Cup, England have adopted one of their most popular songs from one of their most iconic bands for their victory anthem. Now it might be time for Oasis’s Liam Gallagher to put his money where his mouth is.
New anthem in England
Now that England are one step closer to the final, belief is starting to grow and plans are starting to be made. There is still a long way to go, and England are going to have to get through Norway in the quarters and then a semifinal match potentially against Argentina but hope is starting to grow back across the pond.
One of England’s heroes, that doesn’t wear cleats or shin pads, has made a promise if the Three Lions get back to the final. Liam Gallagher is as invested as anyone in this World Cup. The Oasis singer is a massive soccer fan, and his band, Oasis, has seen their song become the victory chant for Thomas Tuchel’s side after each of their World Cup matches.
The iconic song looks to have brought some good luck to this side that is looking to “bring it home” after 60 years. If England deliver a return to the final for the first time in six decades, Gallagher may have to be in attendance and if his team wins he may be playing “Wonderwall” on the pitch as the confetti falls from New York/New Jersey Stadium.
Gallagher “ready” for final
Gallagher responded to a post on X, asking him if his country got back to the World Cup final would be be there for a live performance of the victory song. “[If] we do hit the final you know it’s mandatory you fly out there and sing wonderwall live on the pitch,” asked one of his followers after the win over Mexico. The frontman was there with a quick answer. “Well see. I’m ready.”
England locked horns with one of the co-hosts of the tournament, Mexico, and the match from the Estadio Ciudad de Mexico will go down as a World Cup classic. There were red cards, penalties, VAR reviews and plenty of goals in the round of 16 match and a 10 man England withstood an onslaught from Mexico for the final half hour. Before they looked ahead to the quarterfinal match, they made sure to serenade their fans with a rendition of “Wonderwall” from 7,000 feet above sea level.
The celebrations have died down and now it’s time to turn their attention to Norway who they will meet in the quarters after Erling Haaland’s brace over Brazil. Argentina and Egypt play to kick off the final day of the round of 16 and then the day ends with Switzerland and Colombia tomorrow afternoon. If England move on from the quarters they will have to play one of those teams before Gallagher can start thinking about booking tickets.
