Liga MX continues US growth with twice as many viewers as Premier League
A study prepared by sports business platform ‘El Míster’ illustrates the ongoing growth of Liga MX in the United States .
Liga MX has more than 60 million fans in the United States and a television audience double that of the English Premier League. These are findings of a study conducted by the sports business data company El Míster which highlights the growth of Mexican soccer in the US thanks to the populus Latino community.
The report prepared by El Míster shares data from Nielsen and Televisa Univisión revealing how the Hispanic community in the United States watched more football than the NFL in 2022. Liga MX also is the second soccer competition with the highest number of searches on Google in the US, trailing in this metric behind the Premier League. The cities in which the highest index of searches are concentrated are in Texas (Brownsville/McAllen, Laredo), Arizona (Yuma) and California (Bakersfield, Fresno), where the Hispanic presence is notable.
Liga MX is a television powerhouse in the US. Figures from World Soccer TV, cited in the dossier, reveal that nine of the 10 most watched matches in the United States in 2022 were Liga MX games. The report adds that between 33 and 35% of the total audience for the Mexican championship comes from the United States. This is evident with the average number of viewers that tuned into the competition last year: 845,000, against 475,000 for the EPL.
Chivas Guadalajara matches have an average of 828,000 US television viewers with the peak coming during the 2023 Clausura final against Tigres, with a peak of 3.3 million.
