Liga MX loses out: Mexico faces power-rankings reality check
Despite featuring several international stars, Mexico’s elite division is well off the top of a new ranking of global leagues.
Despite the arrival of several internationally recognized stars, and even though many players themselves describe it as one of the best domestic divisions in the world, Liga MX has landed only 21st in the league power rankings released by analytics firm Opta.
While Liga MX’s growth has been undeniable, with a number of high-profile players choosing to continue their careers in Mexico, international analysts at Opta, a company specializing in soccer data and performance analysis, still place Mexican soccer well outside the sport’s elite competitions.
Liga MX playing catch-up in the Americas
According to the rankings shared by Opta on social media, Liga MX sits seventh among leagues across the Americas, trailing competitions in Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, the United States and Paraguay.
The power rankings are based on the overall competitive strength of each league.
EPL dominates elite
According to Opta’s assessment, England’s Premier League earned the highest rating and claimed the top spot. Spain’s LaLiga finished second, while Germany’s Bundesliga rounded out the podium in third place.
