Liga MX statement after fans left injured by fireworks

A league statement denounced the use of fireworks or any type of activity that could be a danger to the public’s healthy inside stadiums.

In the hours leading up to the Liga MX quarter final first leg between Tigres and Toluca, four fans were injured by fireworks that were launched just as the home team bus arrived at Estadio Universitario. The four victims required medical treatment for their injuries, the Liga MX confirmed in a statement.

“Today, prior to the Tigres vs. Toluca match in the quarter finals, during the reception of the Tigres team bus, four people were injured due to the use of fireworks by local fans in the vicinity of the University Stadium. Those affected were immediately treated by members of the medical services and Civil Protection staff. The police are investigating the facts to establish responsibilities,” a Liga MX statement, posted on social media read.

Article 13. c of the Liga MX’s rules and regulations states that pyrotechnical and inflammable materials including flares, smoke bombs, fireworks... etc are strictly prohibited inside the stadium. The organizing body adds that it strongly denounces any kind of behavior or activities by fans that “could harm the health of those attending games inside the stadium”.

Images of the supporters who suffered burns after fireworks were thrown during the team bus’ arrival were shared on social media. Toluca and Tigres return to decide the quarter final in the second leg at Estadio Nemesio Díez on Sunday.
