Liga MX teams struggle to make corners count

Just 24 goals have been scored out of the 825 corner-kicks awarded so far in the first nine weeks of the Liga MX 2023 Clausura.

Corner-kicks, one of the most effective variants on the set-piece, play an importance role in determining matches. But currently, that doesn’t appear to be the case in Mexican soccer where the average effectiveness of the strategy it is very low - barely 3 per cent.

A close look at the statistics show that of the total 825 corner-kicks taken after nine weeks of action, just 24 goals have been scored, which amounts to a paltry 3 percent success rate.

It’s a telling statistic, and an area which Liga MX teams can improve on - if they can do that, results will follow.

According to the data, América is the team that took the most corner-kicks in the first nine weeks of the competition - a total of 69 from which they scored just one goal, which shows the low level of effectiveness from such set-pieces.

Some teams have even worst record: Santos de Torreón (63 corners), Necaxa (36), Atlético San Luis (31) and Querétaro (28) are all on zero goals from the corner-kicks they have taken so far.

At the other end of the list, the team with the greatest effectiveness from corners is FC Juárez with six goals from 48, followed by Chivas Guadalajara and Puebla with three goals from 50 and 29 corners respectively.

Cruz Azul has found the net twice from 44 corner kicks, while the remaining teams such as América, Pumas, Toluca, Tigres, Pachuca, León, Tijuana, Atlas, Monterrey and Mazatlán have only managed one goal in all of their attempts.
