Ligue 1

Ligue 1: The season so far

PSG is leading the way in Ligue 1 with Messi and Neymar dominating, but Marseille is gaining on them and making sure they don’t get too comfortable.

The Ligue 1 stars are returning from the international break and as it stands, PSG is atop the league charts with Marseille trailing closely behind. PSG will host Nice on Saturday and Marseille will travel to play Angers.

PSG atop Ligue 1

PSG have won seven games, tied one, and have yet to lose. Their front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé have together netted 27 goals.

Neymar is unstoppable this season. He has at least one goal against each of the 25 teams he’s faced in Ligue 1. Seven assists is his second-best return in a top-flight campaign with PSG. He had 13 in the 2017-18 season. The Brazilian has been involved in more Ligue 1 goals after 100 games in the competition than any other player since Opta data collection began in 2006-07 (121).

Messi is back to his usual self. It took him an unusually long time (let’s be clear, for him) to reach 10 league goals in France (34 games), but he has made a huge impact since day 1 with PSG. Messi and Neymar have assisted each other five times in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other duo.

PSG will play Nice this Saturday at Parc de Princes. On Wednesday, they take on Benfica in the Champions League.

Marseille following closely behind PSG

Marseille have been thriving under their new manager Igor Tudor. They are a very close second to PSG, with six wins, two ties, and no losses. They haven’t won a title since 2010, but they’ve put themselves back in the running this year.

Alexis Sanchez has been responsible for four goals in seven appearances so far and Nuno Tavares has scored three.

Marseille will play on the road against Angers on Friday before playing their third Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.
