Limited edition 2026 World Cup coins: Everything you need to know about the $10, $20 and $25 pesos release
The World Cup is coming to Mexico and to celebrate the historic event the Bank of Mexico is releasing limited edition coins honoring the country’s heritage.
The World Cup is coming to Mexico, Canada and the United States this summer. All three countries are sure to receive a massive influx of income with the biggest event in the sporting world gracing the borders of all three countries. Mexico has taken the opportunity to pay tribute to soccer’s most illustrious tournament by literally coining the World Cup.
Commemorative Cup coins
The Bank of Mexico released 12 limited edition, commemorative coins to celebrate the World Cup coming to their country for the first time since 1986. The coins have a value of $10, $20 and $25. The three coins are made of different materials and will have special decorations that relate to both soccer and the country’s heritage.
The $20 bimetallic coins will consist of four different designs paying tribute to three different cities around the country. The first of which will represent Mexico City and will feature landmarks like the Angle of Independence. A coin dedicated to Guadalajara has the figure of a soccer player and the sculpture of Roman Goddess Minerva. The Monterrey coin will feature the famous Crisol Fountain and the Cerro de la Silla.
The fourth coin doesn’t represent a particular city. Instead it depicts a jaguar and a soccer ball which stands as an homage to the countries World Cup past. The coin will have an engraving inside of it, that writes out “Mexico, three-time World Cup host.”
Mexico hosts South Africa to open tournament
Mexico will host the World Cup for a record third time. They are cohosts this year, but in 1970 and 1986 they were sole hosts of the completion. The commemorative coins will be a tip of the hat to the present tournament and the past tournaments. The $10 coin is made of silver and the $25 coin will be made of gold. Just like the $20 coins, there will be nods to the three host cities Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
The $20 bimetallic coins will be set into circulation starting May 18th. They will be coins that will be regularly accepted in establishments and businesses around the country. The $10 and $25 silver and gold coins will be sold at the Mexican Mint and the Interactive Museum of Economics and have been available since May 14th.
The World Cup kicks off in Mexico City on June 11th with Mexico taking on South Africa. There will be games all over the three host cities from Mexico from teams all across the 12 groups in this new look, enhanced World Cup that will be hosted in three different nations.
