Liverpool coach Arne Slot mocks Manchester City relegation in Mohamed Salah last game response
After Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Anfield, Slot has joked about City being relegated as a result of their 115 FFP charges.
Liverpool had the last laugh as they defeated Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday. Now, head coach Arne Slot has joked about Pep Guardiola’s team potentially being relegated as a result of them being charged them with 115 breaches of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
The Dutchman was responding to recent comments made by star attacker Mohamed Salah, who scored a penalty in the Reds’ victory at the weekend, which sent them nine points clear at the top of the table.
The Egyptian, who has scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 22 appearances against City over the years, has yet to sign a new contract with Liverpool beyond the summer of 2025, which has led to speculation he could leave the club at the end of the season.
Salah spoke of his wish to enjoy the game in case it was the last time he faced City at Anfield, which set Slot up perfectly for a jibe at Guardiola’s struggling team.
Arne Slot’s Manchester City relegation joke
“Maybe Mo knows more about the 115 charges and doesn’t expect them still in the Premier League next season!” quipped the Dutchman.
We still don’t know what punishment City could face, with suggestions it could range from anything from a fine and a point deduction, to titles being stripped and relegation from the Premier League.
Slot was, however, keen to backtrack, making clear his comment was made in jest. “I do expect them to still be in the Premier League. It was a joke!”
Guardiola responds to Liverpool fans' jibes as City struggle
City may not see the funny side, though, after a shocking run of form that has seen them lose six of their last seven games in all competitions. In the midst of that sequence, they were 3-0 up against Feyenoord, Slot’s former club, in the Champions League but conceded three late goals to draw.
During Sunday’s game, Liverpool fans’ chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning!” to Guardiola were met with the former Barcelona coach holding up six fingers up in response, a reference to number of Premier League titles he has won with City.
