Liverpool are set to be without forward Luiz Díaz until after the 2022 World Cup.

Paul Joyce of the Times reports that the forward is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury in the 3-2 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

Díaz forced off in Liverpool defeat

The former FC Porto player was forced off in the first half of the Premier League clash in London after sustaining a knock. Díaz will not, however, require surgery, which is good news for Liverpool. Early reports suggest he could be out for between six and eight weeks with an injury to his left knee.

Jürgen Klopp said after the game that Díaz’s injury did not look good, something that was confirmed after tests were carried out on the player on Monday.

Liverpool’s poor start

Liverpool have only picked up two wins in the Premier League this season, leaving them in 10th place, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. The Colombian has scored three goals and provided two assists in eight Premier League appearances so far this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also went off with an injury, which Klopp later confirmed to be an ankle problem. “Trent is bad as well with the ankle,” Klopp said post-match.

“[He] twisted the ankle, not good. Trent never, in seven years, went off if he could have played on. He was in too much pain, it started swelling immediately, so we will have to see.”

Is Colombia going to the World Cup?

The Colombian Football Federation sacked coach Reinaldo Rueda earlier this year after the nation’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Colombia finished sixth in the 10-team CONMEBOL qualification process, meaning Díaz will have the opportunity to rest and continue his recovery while the World Cup takes place in Qatar.
