Liverpool will be without several key players over the coming weeks as they continue to compete on several fronts. The current league leaders take on Luton Town at Anfield in the Premier League today (Wednesday) and will be without Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones.

The pair picked up knocks in the first half of the 4-1 victory away to Brentford on Saturday. Jota has been ruled out with a knee injury, while Jones has an ankle problem that will see him miss out. Striker Darwin Núñez withdrew at half-time at Brentford and remains a doubt for the Luton clash.

Jürgen Klopp will also be without the influential Trent Alexander-Arnold due to an ongoing knee issue, while midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai and goalkeeper Alisson will also miss out due to hamstring problems.

Klopp on injuries

“So, not available is obviously Ali, that’s a muscle injury where we don’t know exactly how long it takes but definitely not for foreseeable time coming back,” said Klopp on Tuesday.

“Then we have Diogo with a knee issue, is ruled out. Curtis, with a bone ligament issue, ruled out.

“And then we have the others where we will deal with it day by day with muscle things. We will see for tomorrow. You see the line-up early enough and then you can see who made it and who didn’t make it. That’s it pretty much.

“All the little bit longer-term like Trent and Dom, they are on their way back but not in team training yet, so that means they are not available as well.”

Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher looks set to start in place of Alisson at both Anfield on Wednesday and at Wembley, as he attempts to pick up his second Carabao Cup winners’ medal with the Merseyside club. Thiago Alcántara, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak and Joel Matip are the other Liverpool absentees.

Liverpool currently lead the way in the Premier League ahead of Manchester City in second place and Arsenal in third, and despite their injury concerns will be aiming for their first silverware of the season on Sunday. A win over Luton will see them move four points clear of City but Pep Guardiola’s side will have a game in hand.
