Liverpool interested in Barcelona wonderkid Gavi as contract talks stall

The 17-year-old Spain international’s contract with the Blaugrana expires on 30 June 2023 and negotiations for a contract extension have stalled.

After losing to Real Madrid in Paris on Saturday, Liverpool are now planning for the future and Barcelona midfielder Gavi is part of their plans.

The 17-year-old Spain international’s contract with the Blaugrana expires on 30 June 2023 and negotiations for a contract extension have stalled.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta explained in an interview with L’Esportiu this week that “his agent has had the renewal offer on the table for a long time. We have no news that it has been accepted. We have already stated our position and, at the moment, it has not been accepted by the player’s agent”.

Gavi’s agent is Iván de la Peña, who was later quick to point out that he has been waiting for some time for an offer from the Camp Nou outfit.

Barça have signed both Franck Kessié and Andreas Christensen on free transfers, who will earn salaries similar to what Gavi’s representatives are negotiating over. This has not gone down well with Gavi’s agents, who, are prioritising Barça’s offer over others.

Mané set to leave Anfield

Liverpool are set to lose Sadio Mané, with the Senegal forward potentially moving to Bayern Munich next season, as reported by Sky Sports on 10 May.

If the Bundesliga side have a replacement in place to cover the possible departure of Robert Lewandowski, this could open up the possibility of the Polish striker’s departure, with Barcelona interested in his services.

It remains to be seen whether the sale of a player as highly-talented as Gavi should be the price to pay for the 34-year-old striker.
