Liverpool vs Manchester United summary: score, goals, highlights | Premier League 2022-23
Full-time: Liverpool 7 (SEVEN)-0 Manchester United
Hands on who had that on their coupon? Hands up who saw that coming after 40 minutes? Wow! Just wow!
I’m honestly (almost) speechless in relation to that second half. NOBODY could have predicted that the game would have panned out that way if they’d watched the first period.
Liverpool made a fast start but never seriously threatened the United goal and it was the visitors who were in the ascendency in the middle quarter of the game. They had chances too, with Fernandes heading just wide at the back post, Rashford shooting tamely at Alisson from a great position and Antony getting into a number of dangerous positions but wasting them.
The Reds’ first goal from Gakpo came completely against the run of play but ended up opening the floodgates, even though the half-time break came just after it. The Dutch attacker’s strike came just two minutes before the interval and two minutes after it, Nuñez headed in a second to put Liverpool in total control. But Jürgen Klopp’s men weren’t just after control, they were after blood.
With confidence and momentum flowing through their veins, it was attack after attack, with United unable to cope with their opponents’ relentless as they curled up into a ball. Gakpo and Nuñez both scored another goal each, Salah helped himself to a brace too and sub Roberto Firmino completed the humiliation with two minutes to go.
Salah is now Liverpool’s all-time record Premier League goalscorer and might be disappointed not to have netted a hat-trick against a United defence that completely lost their discipline and were all at sea after the second goal went in.
HISTORIC.
What's next for Manchester United?
United's next game is in midweek against Real Betis in the Europa League. The first leg will be played at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Their next league game is at home to Southampton next Sunday.
What's next for Liverpool?
Today's victory will take some beating...
Their next match is in the Premier League next Saturday and will see them travel to face struggling Bournemouth, who, ironically enough, they thrashed 9-0 at Anfield earlier in the season.
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp: "Everyone has to know we are still around!
"No words. Spectacular football game. Outstanding. We played top football against the team in form."
"The second half the start was pretty good and the end was pretty good. That is football, it can happen."
"It was the push we wanted. It puts us in the right direction. Everyone has to know we are still around. It wasn't the case for a while but tonight was a proper show of what we can be and what we have to be from now on."
"It was all top performances today. That is very important for us - 13 games to come? A lot of points to go for. Tonight it was perfect."
On Mohamed Salah becoming Liverpool's record Premier League scorer: "129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special."
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp still to speak to the media
Still waiting for Jürgen Klopp to speak to the media, hopefully it won't be too much longer.
Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag: "Unprofessional and unacceptable"
"I think we played a decent first half. One mistake in organisation just before half-time. Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn't play as a team. It was unprofessional. Yes [I am angry]. Definitely.
"I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude. Second half we didn't have a winning attitude at all. We didn't stick to the plan and we didn't do our jobs.
"We didn't track back and it was really unprofessional. We have seen in the past we can bounce back. After Brentford, after Manchester City. This is definitely a strong setback and is unacceptable. I'm really disappointed and angry about it.
"It is a reality check. We have to take this strong."
Gakpo: "It's amazing - we scored seven!"
"Everybody told me a lot about this game - how important it is for the fans and the club. The performance was amazing."
"I think we were just determined, eager to keep going. In the end, we got enough chances. It's amazing - we scored seven!"
"The ball from Robbo was amazing - even he told me to go in behind - I made the run and he made a brilliant pass. I just had to take a touch inside - we practice this a lot in training."
"We were determined to keep going, we learnt from our mistakes in previous games. We kept the mentality."
Salah: "I'm going to celebrate with a camomile tea!"
"It's very special - we just need to stay humble, win the games and continue. We are not where we want to be."
"It's very special [breaking the record] - I've always been chasing that record - I am going to go home and celebrate with the family."
"I'm going to go home, celebrate with my family and have a chamomile tea!!
"We just need to keep going and play our football."
"My 129th goal was very special!"
Liverpool vs Manchester United reaction coming up
We'll have some reaction from both sides coming up...you probably don't want to miss this.
Premier League table: Manchester United title hopes over
That just has to be that as far as Manchester United's title hopes are concerned. Even a 1-0 defeat would probably have ended their challenge.
It's hard to see Liverpool not qualifying for the Champions League, even though they are currently in fifth spot. They're just three points behind Spurs with a game in hand and now have all the momentum.

Jota nearly in for an EIGHTH for Liverpool! Shaw gets his body in the way (for once) and De Gea pounces on it.
Three minutes of injury time.
It's all happening as Robertson gets taken out by a fan who came onto the pitch to celebrate...
And Alexander-Arnold goes down under the challenge of Shaw in the box. Could've been a penalty...
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! FIRMINO
I can't believe what I'm seeing here!
Salah threads another ball through into the heart of the United box and it's Firmino who gets on the end of it to fire the ball past De Gea and into the net!
What a ridiculous second half from Liverpool. Absolutely incredible. They have been relentless.
Jones on, Elliott off for Liverpool.
Elanga replaces Rashford for United.
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! SALAH!
A goal which sums up the defensive mess United have been in the second half!
Elliott plays the ball into the near post, Shaw has a chance to clear it and kicks it straight to Salah, who sticks it in the net!
Not even VAR can save United.
Bajcetic skips past Fernandes as if the Portuguese weren't there. This must be a hard watch if you're a United fan.
United are going to get caught out again here if they're not careful. Fernandes is next to show his frustration in a tussle with Alexnader-Arnold and...the assistant referee.
Antony was such a prominent figure in the first half and has barely kicked the ball in the second. He puts another cross into the box, another one cut out.
A whole host of changes.
Sabitzer and Malacia on for Casemiro and Martínez for United.
Bajetic, Jota, Milner and Firmino all on for Liverpool. Nuñez, Gakpo, Fabinho and Henderson off.
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! NUÑEZ!
Wow.
Alexander-Arnold's free-kick is cleared out to Henderson, who drifts a beautiful cross in for Nuñez, whose glancing header finds the far corner!
A rare save from De Gea as Nuñez whistles the ball across goal that the Spaniard does just enough to beat away.
Just to emphasise that point further, Rashford goes through and rounds Alisson, only to hit the outside of the post from a tight angle.
Really not United or Marcus Rashford's day. Fernandes looks to have played the striker clean through but Alexander-Arnold gets back to make a crucial tackle (and then the offside flag went off).
Liverpool are stroking the ball around like peak Brazil 1970/Barcelona 2011. Incredible how this has happened after the last 25 minutes of the first half.
Fernandes wants a penalty for handball as Konaté falls on the ball in the box but there was nothing the defender could have done there.
Quite a big bit of handbags (if there is such a thing) between Nuñez and Shaw near the touchline. The United defender nudged the striker a couple of times and got a little push in retaliation.
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! SALAH!
Mo Salah just loves playing against Manchester United!
And it's another counterattack. This is like Liverpool from three or four years ago. McTominay looks as if he's got a foot in to stop the attack but the ball deflects through Salah, whose absolutely rifles the ball high past De Gea!
Another yellow for United as sub McTominay is next to wipe out Gakpo.
The olés are out as Liverpool keep possession.
Lisandro Martínez has had enough and who can blame him? Yellow card for a crude challenge on Gakpo in midfield.
United changes
Garnacho and McTominay on for Weghorst and Fred as United try to do something - anything - to stop the flow of Liverpool attacks.
Inches wide from Konaté!
And from said corner, it's very nearly a goal for Konaté, who steams into the box and gets his head on it, only to see the ball whistle inches past the post. What a start to the half from Liverpool, United are totally under the cosh.
Shots raining in on the United goal and it's Gakpo again! This time his shot from the edge of the box is deflected wide for a corner.
Almost four! Gakpo lays the ball off inside the box to Robertson, whose right-footed strike flies inches wide of the post!
Rashford then gets in behind the Liverpool defence and looks certain to get a shot away but again miscues.
Alisson...almost a lifeline!
Almost a lifeline for United! The ball is played back to Alisson, who takes his eye off it and Fernandes is onto it. He goes down under Alisson's challenge but there's nothing doing.
Wow, I did not see this coming.
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! GAKPO!
What are we seeing here?!
United push bodies forward and Liverpool hit them with a devastating counter-attack. Salah gets away down the right, turns Martínez inside out and slips the ball into the box for Gakpo, who dinks it over De Gea from a ridiculous angle!
Antony tries to respond immediately for United but his strike is straight at Alisson.
A goal just before half-time and just after. Can't do much better than that.
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! NUÑEZ!
What a start to the second half!
United make a mess of this, Shaw gives it away, Casemiro can't get a hold of it. Salah's cross is blocked by Shaw to Elliott, who fires the ball across goal for Nuñez to nod home for close range!
Liverpool vs Manchester United: second half underway
What does the second half have in store for us? Let's find out!
Premier League: as it stands
Things are not looking good for Manchester United, as things stand. A defeat at Anfield would see them remain 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, with just one game in hand. Surely that would be too much of a gap to make up.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will feel confident of clinching a top-four spot. They would be three points behind Tottenham, who are not in good form, with a game in hand if they hang onto their lead.

He's had a relatively slow start to his Liverpool career but Netherlands international Cody Gakpo is starting to find his feet. A superb strike to give the Reds the lead.

Half-time: Liverpool 1-0 Manchester United
Well, well, well. What a time for Liverpool to score! That goal came against the run of play, what a huge boost for Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp’s side flew out of the blocks – as they tend to do – and pinned United back in the first 15-20 minutes, without threatening too much. Salah looked lively in his search for his record-equalling goal but curled his only effort well wide of De Gea’s post.
The visitors survived the early onslaught unscathed and began to take control of the game as the half wore on. And they created by far the best chances too, with Fernandes heading Dalot’s cross inches wide and Rashford shooting tamely at Alisson when he really should’ve done better. Antony has got into dangerous positions and tested his compatriot early on, although he should have done better when played through by Fernandes late on in the half.
Just when it looked as if Liverpool would be happy to go in goalless, Gakpo drifted in behind Fred and skipped inside Varane before planting a crisp strike in the far corner.
Things getting a bit heated on the touchline as Antony and Robertson clash. Half-time might be coming at a good time for those two.
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL FOR LIVERPOOOL! GAKPO!
Well, we didn't see that one coming...
Robertson plays a nice ball in behind Fred to Gakpo, whose in the box, easily skips inside Varane and fires into the far corner!
Against the run of play, it's fair to say.
Casemiro has the ball in the net...! But it's offside. Well offside.
Fabinho is first in the book. Seconds after he's involved in an incident with Varane at the edge of the box, he sees yellow for tripping Rashford.
Antony round Alisson...cleared!
I've said it before and I'm going to say it again. Antony has just wasted what is perhaps the biggest opportunity so far. Elliott gives it away in midfield and the United attack ends up with Fernandes playing a slide-rule pass for Antony, who could shoot but decides to go round Alisson, only to be crowded out.
Almost another chance for Rashford, who found himself all alone inside the Liverpool box. Dalot saw him and tried to pick him out but overhit the ball in. That could've been dangerous.
United have really managed to cut off Liverpool's threat in the last 15 minutes or so. They've grown into this game nicely.
A first venture into the United boxfor a few minutes from Liverpool. Robertson works it to Nuñez, who has men in the middle but 'does an Antony' and it's cut out.
More work for Alisson to do but it's comfortable. Shaw whips a free-kick into the box and Dalot heads it straight at the Liverpool keeper.
Antony popped up on the left there and looks to be staying on that flank for now. We'll keep an eye on that tactical change.
Another great chance for Antony to pick out the unmarked Rashford as United break. The Brazilian takes a little too long to see him though and another cross is cut out, this time by Konaté.
Best chances for Manchester United
Two narrow escapes for Liverpool there. United have definitely created the two best chances and brought another decent stop out of Alisson. De Gea hasn't made a save yet.
Bigger chance for Rashford!
And within seconds, Rashford gets in behind the Liverpool defence and is picked out by a superb ball from Shaw, only to shoot tamely at Alisson!
Big chance for Fernandes!
The closest we've come so far! Dalot sticks an excellent cross to the back post and Fernandes' diving header bounces inches wide of the post!
Oooooh, Martínez has got away with one there. That had to be a foul as he catches Salah with an arm...nothing given.
A promising break for United this time, which ends up with Antony getting in behind Robertson. With men in the box, the winger goes for the outside of the boot cross and makes a bit of a mess of it...
Liverpool almost in front!
Another Liverpool flurry and it almost gives them the lead! Alexander-Arnold plays in Robertson, whose shot looks goalbound but is headed away by Martínez. The Scot then whips in a tempting cross which Nuñez looks set to get on the end of before Martínez sticks a foot in!
One of those infuriating corners (as a neutral) which ends up being taken short, played back into midfield and lost...
Rashford justifying his inclusion as the central striker by outpacing Van Dijk and winning a corner. That's encouraging for the visitors.
Liverpool are still doing most of the attacking and there are yet more mishits inside the United penalty area. Henderson latches onto a loose ball but bobbles a volley into the ground before Nuñez, who's offside, lashes one well wide.
Uproar from the Anfield faithful as Antony kicks out at Salah inside the Liverpool half. A bit naughty from the United winger.
A scramble in the United box that you'd be more likely to see down your local park than in the Premier League at Anfield. Miscued headers, skewed passes and ballooned crosses ends up with Elliott slicing well wide. A fitting end.
A first sight of goal for Salah! And he's in the perfect 'Mo Salah position'. But he doesn't provide a 'Mo Salah finish', curling well wide of De Gea's post.
A slight drop in tempo after a frenetic start. United have looked more comfortable in the last few minutes.
Rashford's first involvement in the game sees his clatter into the advertising boards behind the goal...there might've been a slight nudge from Konaté to help him on his way.
It's been all Liverpool so far but the best effort on goal so far comes from Antony! He cuts in the right and sends one towards the bottom corner, which Alisson pushes away for a corner (which comes to nothing).
Liverpool have made a really bright start here, pressing really high up the pitch. United hanging in there.
And that looked to be a chance for Van Dijk from the corner! But he mistimed his jump and the opportunity was gone.
First corner of the game goes to Liverpool as Robertson tries to get past Dalot, only to see his cross deflected behind.
Another dangerous break into the box from Salah but Fred gets his body in the way and does enough to see the ball out for a goal kick.
Konaté is next to send an opponent sprawling. Weghorst ends up on the deck but wins the free-kick.
An immediate sight of goal for the hosts as Salah slides the ball through to Elliott, whose shot from just inside the box is blocked!
I don't think we made it to 60 seconds before Casemiro and Fred both put in crunching tackles in midfield. I think both were fouls, no yellows though.
An immediate tactical observation...Weghorst looks to be playing 'in the hole', with Fernandes on the left and Rashford through the middle for United.
Liverpool vs Manchester United kick-off!

Klopp and Ten Hag: respect and admiration
A warm hug between Klopp and Ten Hag as we get ready to go underway. Will the love-in continue once the game gets underway?
You'll Never Walk Alone lyrics
A few minutes until kick-off at Anfield can only mean one thing. It's time for You'll Never Walk Alone, here are the lyrics in case you want to sing along.
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
For your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

One man who could have an impact from the bench at Anfield is young Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho, who joined United from Atlético Madrid in 2020. One of his former youth coaches has been speaking about his transformation from a 'rascal' to one of the world's bright soccer talents.
"He has that thing that characterises special players: they can be rebellious”.
Mo Salah: Liverpool's record Premier League scorer against Manchester United
Not Mohammed Salah's best season in front of goal so far but would you ever best against him finding the net? No Liverpool player has scored more Premier League goals (10) against Manchester United.

Despite Salah's relative league struggles this season, he's on the brink of writing his name into the Liverpool history books (if he hasn't done so already).
One more goal will see him equal Robbie Fowler's tally of 128 Premier League (you maths geniuses will be able to work out that he needs two to set a new record).
More here on what the Egyptian had to say on the prospect of setting a new benchmark.
Liverpool vs Manchester United: Salah vs Rashford
Rashford has become Manchester United's talisman this season and in recent months in particular. The England international has netted 25 goals in 39 games in all competitions, including 14 in 24 Premier League matches and 17 since the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Salah, meanwhile, has been one of the Premier League's leading lights since joining the Reds in 2017. The Egyptian has only once failed to score 20 league goals but has serious work to do to get there this season. He currently sits on nine in 24 matches, compared to eight in just seven Champions League appearances in 2022-23.

I mentioned right at the start of this feed that these two clubs don't especially like each other. Two local rivals (it's about a 45-minute drive from Liverpool to Manchester) who just happen to be England's two most successful clubs. It couldn't be any other way.
Yet Reds boss Jürgen Klopp was being pretty nice about Sunday's opponents - and striker Marcus Rashford in particular - in the run-up to the game.
"It’s impossible to be happy about something positive at Manchester Utd when you are Liverpool manager but I am really happy for Rashford.
“He had a very difficult last year when he was not performing at the level he can and I knew this would change, although sometimes you don’t have the time to change but he has changed it.
“He is playing incredibly. His technique, speed, a mix of everything. How calm he is in front of goal - he scores worldies, simple ones, headers."
The German even praised counterpart Ten Hag for turning United into a "results machine". He must be going soft in his old age.
Here's everything Klopp had to say about Rashford, Ten Hag and the Red Devils on Friday.
Erik Ten Hag's one previous game at Anfield
If you scroll down a little, you'll see if mentioned that this will be Erik Ten Hag's first game as Manchester United at Anfield. But he has taken charge of a game away to Liverpool before...when he was Ajax boss. The Dutch giants were beaten 1-0 both home and away in the 2020-21 Champions League campaign, which ended with them dropping down to the Europa League, where they lost to Roma in the quarter-finals.
Manchester United arrive for Liverpool test
Ah, fear not. Ten Hag hasn't come alone. The United boys are in the house.

Manchester United team to play Liverpool
Literally seconds later (they'll have to be faster off the mark at Anfield, though), United announce their team lines (by numbers, not cool).
De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martínez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst.
The same team that defeated Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley last Sunday. Varane and Shaw are indeed fit to play and start. Huge for the visitors!

Liverpool vs Manchester United: last five meetings
Liverpool put nine goals past Manchester United without reply in last season’s Premier League, which seems absolutely insane, if I'm honest. And it also makes how the two teams have fared in 2022-23 all the more surprising.
Here's how the teams have fared when they've come up against each other in the last couple of years.
August 2022: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool, Premier League
April 2022: Liverpool 4-0 Manchester United, Premier League
October 2021: Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool, Premier League
May 2021: Manchester United 2-4 Liverpool, Premier League
January 2021: Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool, FA Cup
Manchester United: the 2022-23 season so far
Manchester United have been England’s form team since the World Cup break but will be cursing a last-gasp defeat to league leaders Arsenal, which leaves them looking at the top of the table with hope rather than expectation. The Reds headed into the weekend 11 points behind the Gunners, which has now been extended to 14 following their dramatic win over Bournemouth yesterday. Erik Ten Hag’s side, however, have two games in hand.
Bizarrely, eight of the Red Devils’ last 10 matches have been played at Old Trafford, where they have won 18 and drawn two of their last 20 fixtures. Their form on the road has been rather less impressive, with two victories in their last five away matches.
Ten Hag's men defeated Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup last weekend, will host Fulham in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and play Real Betis in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Could they do the quadruple? They have to win today if they are to have any chance in the Premier League.
Liverpool: the 2022-23 season so far
I'm going to go ahead and say that this season has not gone as well as Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp would’ve hoped, although things could be worse were it not for a recent upturn in fortunes. The Reds’ results in the last few weeks has been dominated by their 5-2 home defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 but their domestic form has turned around drastically in the last few weeks.
Liverpool started 2023 by taking just one point from a possible 12 in the league, which severely dented their hopes of a top-four finish. But Klopp’s side have now taken 10 points from the last 12 available, which has brought their back into contention; they currently sit six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.
Qualifying for the Champions League is all they have left to play for after an FA Cup defeat to Brighton, unless they can miraculously win by three goals or more in the Bernabéu (I wouldn't bet on it).

Manchester United early team news
Again, nothing official from the boys from Old Trafford although there does appear to be some good news on the selection front. Left-back turned centre-back Luke Shaw and central defender Raphaël Varane had been the main fitness doubts, although the indications are that both have made the squad. There are also question marks over the fitness of Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial. Christian Eriksen is still unavailable due to an ankle injury.
Liverpool early team news
No line-ups just yet but I can give you a rough idea of who's not likely to be playing.
On the Liverpool side, the game is expected to come too soon for Luis Díaz and Thiago Alcánatara, while Joe Gomez, Naby Keita and Arthur Melo are all fitness doubts, although none will likely start in any case.
Of course, you may be looking for a way to watch the game, in which case, you are bang in luck. If you’re watching from the United States, there is a way and this is it!

Hello and welcome to Liverpool vs Manchester United!
It’s March and we have officially entered the ‘business end’ of the season! For Liverpool that means qualifying for the Champions League and little else, while Manchester United still have faint hopes of winning a first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, was well as adding more silverware to the Carabao Cup that they lifted against Newcastle United last weekend.
Thank you for joining me (Roddy) for what should be a feisty clash at Anfield between two teams that don’t exactly like each other…
