While Jürgen Klopp has watched in horror as his team’s ambitions of being in the Premier League title race evaporate into thin air after just 12 games, in Europe, Liverpool have enjoying more consistency, at least in terms of results. The Reds sit second in Group A having lost just one match - to Napoli, the team they welcome to Anfield on Tuesday.

Both teams have already cemented their place in the next round but mathematically, the top two positions have yet to be decided. A home win would bring Liverpool level with the Italian on 15 points but wouldn’t affect the standings - to knock Napoli off top spot, they would need to win by four clear goals, and that seems very unlikely if not impossible.

Liverpool aim to end group stage on a high
Watching Napoli blaze a trail through the group stage has been an eye-opener - especially considering all of the upheaval and personnel changes the club went through over the summer. Luciano Spalletti’s team are the top scorers in this edition of the tournament with a staggering 20 goals - just five short of the all-time group stage record set by PSG in 2017.
The Italians have scored a minimum of three goals in all of their group games - including the four they fired past Liverpool on Matchday 1. And their goals have come from a variety of sources - 11 different outfield players, from defence to attack, have found the target. Two players who only joined the club in the summer, Giovanni Simeone and Giacomo Raspadori, are the team’s top scorers with four goals each, followed by Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski on three.
Second choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu returned to training at the weekend after missing three games through muscle fatigue. Centre-back Amir Rrahmani is the only player still in the sickbay - he remains out recovering from a torn abductor but is training in the gym. Otherwise, Spalletti’s team are at full strength.
As for Liverpool, they will be hoping to make up for a disappointing couple of weeks on the domestic front. A week ago, Klopp’s side became one of just two sides to have lost to Nottingham Forest, the team bringing up the rear in the Premier League and followed that up with a 1-2 defeat to Leeds on Saturday - a result which brought to an end an unbeaten home run in the league that dated back to March 2021.
Liverpool’s European campaign has been more positive although they will almost certainly finish the group stage as runners-up in their group. That will increase the chance of meeting one of the top seeds in the next round - Bayern, Real Madrid, Inter Milan or PSG could await when the competition resumes next year. But for now, all things considered, they will just be happy knowing they’ve made it to the Last 16.
Depending on how the game unravels, Klopp might decide to hand Calvin Ramsay his first run-out with the senior side, although not from the start. The right-back, who joined from Aberdeen in the summer, has yet to make his first team debut but Klopp hinted in his pre-match press briefing that he could come on as a sub late in the game.
