Liverpool vs Villarreal: Champions League preview
In the second of two Premier League-LaLiga clashes in this year’s Champions League semi-finals, six-time tournament winners Liverpool host surprise package Villarreal in the first leg at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Spaniards shocked Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, Samu Chukwueze’s late second-leg goal earning Unai Emery’s Europa League holders a 2-1 aggregate victory over the Bundesliga giants.
Villarreal have reached this stage of the competition once before, and on that occasion also faced Premier League opposition. In 2005/06, the Groguets were left to rue a late second-leg penalty miss by Juan Roman Riquelme as Arsenal booked their final berth at their expense with a 1-0 aggregate win.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will be contesting their 12th European Cup semi-final, and will be attempting to reach the final for the 10th time.
