There’s no good time for an injury, but one could say that Mo Salah’s timing couldn’t have been worse. It’s not just that his nation’s cup hopes have taken a blow, but so too have his club’s ambitions for the season and at a time when things were beginning to look up.

Mo Salah injured in AFCON

There is no doubt that Liverpool FC and its fans will be sweating this evening after Mo Salah was taken off during Egypt’s game against Ghana in the African Cup of Nations. What appeared to be a muscle injury just before halftime in Thursday’s game resulted in the Egyptians’ captain being substituted. It wasn’t long before his absence was felt either, as West Ham forward and Ghana goal-getter, Mohammed Kudus scored a brilliant goal shortly after Salah left the field. With Egypt currently sitting at the bottom of Group B, this is not at all a good moment for the nation to lose its talisman and that’s before we get to the concerns of the Reds and their faithful.

To be clear, Mo Salah has been the best player in the Premier League during the first half of the season and by some distance. The 31-year-old has scored 12 goals and contributed seven assists across 19 English Premier League games for Liverpool, as well as netting three times in the Europa League. On the back of his efforts, Liverpool now sit top of the league i.e., an extended Salah absence would be seriously detrimental to their aspirations. There has been no official word on how long Salah will be out, but even a single game could be costly at this point.
