Lorenzo Insigne takes MLS pay to a new level

The Major League Soccer Players Association released that the Italian international earned $14 million with Toronto FC in his first year.

¿Por qué en la MLS no hay descenso?

The signing of Lorenzo Insigne with Toronto FC has changed the perspective of Major League Soccer when it comes to salaries. On Monday, the MLS Players Association released the Italian’s salary, which has taken the league’s pay to new levels.

Insigne takes MLS pay to new heights

The former Napoli ace earned $14 million in his first few months with Toronto FC, according to the figures released on Monday, with an annual average compensation of $5.187 million. These figures are more than Chicago Fire’s Xherdan Shaquiri, who was the highest-paid player in May when he earned $8.153 million, but that was before the arrival of Insigne to MLS.

The Major League Soccer Players Association said that Insigne’s $14 million is his annualized salary based on a partial-year contract because he arrived during the summer transfer window. Lorenzo Insigne will earn more than any player from the NHL side Maple Leafs, and he ranks fifth among NBA side Raptors this season.

In third place is Los Angeles Galaxy captain Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández at $7.44 million and in fourth is Italian international Federico Bernardeschi, who joined Toronto in July, at $6.256 million. The next Toronto player on this list is fullback Domenico Criscito, who arrived in July and is paid $1.51 million and ranks 57th on the league salary list.
