President of the Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales, surprised everyone at the assembly on Friday, announcing that he is offering Spanish women’s head coach Jorge Vilda a contract renewal for the next four years with a salary of half a million euros a year.

“I invite you to stay with us for the next four years earning €500,000 per year. You deserve it as you are the best coach in the world and you have earned it with the success of the World Cup, because you (Vilda) and your coaching staff are also World Cup champions,” Rubiales said on Friday.

“We’ve been through a lot over the years. You’ve been through the same as what they’re doing to me now.”

Relationship with Rubiales

Vilda has a close relationship with the president of the Federation as witnessed in the recent World Cup celebrations in Madrid, where he dedicated a few words of thanks which were quickly whistled by most of the crowd that gathered in Madrid to welcome the world champions home.

The Spain players were not amused by the words either, as could be seen on their faces when Vilda said: “I want to mention the President of the Federation...”.

Hermoso kiss

Vilda himself did not want to get into the subject of Rubiales and Jenni Hermoso: “Right now I only know that I am happy because we have won and we have made a lot of people happy. I don’t think we understand what we have achieved.”

Vilda, according to Relevo, was one of those who pressured Hermoso to appear with the president in a video in which Rubiales apologized for the kiss, but the player refused. The Spain coach will now have to decide if he wants to continue with the women’s national team despite all the controversy surrounding Rubiales.
