Luis Suárez hoping to renew his contract with Inter Miami: when does it expire?
The Uruguayan striker spoke to the media about his debut season with Inter Miami and expressed his desire to extend his contract with the Herons.
Inter Miami close the MLS regular season on Saturday with the aim of putting the seal on a great year in which they have qualified for the postseason as the top team in the Eastern Conference and as one of the contenders for this season’s MLS Cup.
One player who, in his role as one of the team’s leaders, fully understands what Inter Miami will be playing for in the coming weeks, is Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan spoke during Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with the New England Revolution, and gave his opinion on the season as well as his thoughts on how he sees the future for both the team and for him.
Luis Suárez with two and an half months left on his contract at Inter Miami
The 37-year-old expressed his desire to extend his stay at Inter Miami for another year and continue making history with the club but left the renewal of his contract in the hands of the club and the board, which could be negotiated and announced soon. As it stands, his contract will expire on 31 December.
“My lawyer is talking to the club, but I have a clear mind about finishing the season, which is what I wanted, finishing it in the best way possible, showing the club that I feel motivated, physically fit and with the desire to continue being part of the club’s history and that depends on the club. If it’s up to me, I’d be delighted,” the player began.
The Uruguayan also highlighted the club’s intention to reach the MLS Cup final in December and thus give the fans a joy by obtaining the first league title in the club’s history.
“We have a group that wants to win, wants to compete until the end and has the desire to win the cup here on December 8-9 to give the fans something to cheer about and win the first MLS title in the club’s history,” the player added.
Suárez does not consider Inter Miami to be favorites
In spite of the season the team has had, Suárez prefers not to view Miami as the big favorites to win the title. He knows full well that the playoffs are completely different to the regular season - the pressure is greater, teams have more at stake, and it will be important for Inter Miami to be strong when playing at their stadium.
“We don’t consider ourselves favorites,” he explained. “It’s true that we have to be strong here at home, we are going to decide all the games here at home and for some reason we accumulated the maximum number of points and we try to be strong in that sense. We have a very big challenge that we have to set ourselves in order to get there”.
To end, Suárez spoke about the possibility of Inter Miami playing in next year’s Club World Cup, which he considers a great opportunity, but he acknowledged that the club has not yet been notified about which team will take the last CONCACAF slot for the tournament.
“We have not yet received any confirmation regarding the Club World Cup. That will be decided later and we will be prepared to play in all the tournaments they tell us to and with the desire for the club to continue growing,” he concluded.
