Just one day after Javier Mascherano was confirmed as the Inter Miami head coach, the new man has his first ‘new’ signing.

On Tuesday the Herons announced that striker Luis Suárez has re-signed with the team for 2025, extending his initial one-year deal with the club. The Uruguayan was a huge success in his first season in MLS with 25 goals in all competitions for the Supporters' Shield champions.

“I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family,” Suárez said when the news was announced. “We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy.”

Suárez was a big hit with the Chase Stadium support during his debut season in Miami and was able to resume his telepathic relationship with Lionel Messi. Both will be another year older next season, but you wouldn’t bet against them proving game-winners again in 2025.

How much is Luis Suarez paid at Inter Miami?

Now 37 years old, Suárez will be 38 by the time that the new MLS season rolls around in February. Given his age the club has only offered him a one-year deal and he stands to earn far less than he may have received elsewhere.

Assuming that he re-signs on the same terms, Suárez will bag a guaranteed annual compensation of $1.5 million.

He is not registered in one of Inter Miami’s three Designated Player slots, meaning that his earning are capped by league rules. Non-DP players are limited to a maximum salary of $683,75, however they can also be paid out of the team’s Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) fund in a process known as ‘buying down’.

Players on these types of contracts - Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba - were limited to a ‘compensation ceiling’ of $1,683,750 in 2024. It’s expected that this threshold will remain roughly the same in 2025.

So it’s not going to be a vast payday for Suárez but he does have the chance to compete for MLS Cup once again. The arrival of Mascherano may herald a new era for the Herons and Suárez will be eager to be a part of it.
