Maanum becomes top scorer in Champions League

Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 2-0, securing their place in the Champions League semifinals, with goals by Frida Maanum and Stina Blackstenius.

Arsenal has secured their place in the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2013 after overcoming a one-goal deficit and getting a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Maanum becomes Champions League top scorer

Bayern Munich had the lead over Arsenal with a 1-0 win in the first leg. On Wednesday, though, the Frauen-Bundesliga side couldn’t find the net and Arsenal was unstoppable. Arsenal’s Frida Maanum opened up the scoring, launching a bullet past Bayern’s goalkeeper Maria-Luisa Groh in the 20th minute. Just six minutes later, Stina Blackstenius headed in another to put Arsenal up 2-0 early.

“Our plan was obviously to be aggressive,” said Maanum. “We knew we needed two goals to win this game as well and to go through to the semifinal. So we just wanted to go aggressive out there and press them high, and from there, play good football.”

That goal by Maanum brought her total to five in the Champions League, making her the top scorer in the competition.

When asked if she’d ever scored a better goal than the one against Bayern, Maanum replied smiling, “that’s a good question. I don’t think so actually.”
