Man in demand: these three teams chased Johan Vásquez’s summer signature
Such has been Vásquez’s form at Genoa that the Mexico international is attracting interest from around Europe.
Johan Vásquez’s current form is more than just promising - it’s strong enough to suggest that his future in European football could be truly exceptional. Now a cornerstone of Genoa’s backline, the Mexican defender has earned the captain’s armband for the 2025-26 season, a distinction bestowed upon him by none other than the legendary Patrick Vieira.
Vásquez’s steady rise has begun to attract attention not only from other Serie A clubs but also from teams across Europe’s top leagues.
Which clubs tried to sign Vásquez?
Although the summer transfer window has officially closed across the continent, multiple reports indicate that Vásquez was on the radar of at least three clubs. While that interest is a testament to his growing reputation, Genoa’s plans for him are far too ambitious to entertain any offers - at least for now.
According to transfer market expert César Luis Merlo, FC Porto, Sunderland and AS Roma all made moves to sign Vásquez. Porto reportedly tabled a €20 million ($23.4 million) bid, but Genoa stood firm.
“Under no circumstances was Genoa willing to part ways with Johan Vásquez,” Merlo stated. “Porto offered €20 million, but the club refused to sell. Roma and Sunderland also showed interest, but Genoa declined. In the coming days, expect an announcement extending Johan’s contract through 2028.”
Pumas could get big Vásquez payday
With a contract renewal imminent, Genoa is clearly betting on Vásquez’s value continuing to rise. That’s good news not only for the club but also for his former team, Pumas, who structured a savvy deal when they transferred him to Italy.
As part of the original agreement, Pumas retained 50% of his economic rights. In practical terms, had Genoa accepted Porto’s €20 million offer, Pumas would have pocketed a cool €10 million. With Vásquez’s stock climbing - especially with the World Cup on the horizon - his name could soon be circulating among Europe’s elite clubs, setting the stage for a blockbuster move.
