Manchester City vs Newcastle United: As it happened

Manchester City secured an important win over Newcastle United with a fine first half strike from Julian Alvarez.

Pep Guardiola made changes to the team who beat Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, most notably Alvarez coming in for Cole Palmer on the right wing.

Palmer had been the scorer against Sevilla and it was Alvarez on the scoresheet this time, notching the only goal of the game. Midway through the first half the impressive Phil Foden darted into the Newcastle box before pulling the ball back to Alvarez, who was lurking on the edge of the box.

The Argentine forward took a touch, before rifling a right-footed effort past Nick Pope and into the top corner.

City, and Foden in particular, fashioned other half chances in the second half but neither side came particularly close to the back of the net.

The hosts were able to see out the win and the Etihad erupted in celebration on the final whistle as Manchester City began their home campaign with a hard-fought win.

Akanji speaks to broadcasters after the game

"They are a great team and it wasn't easy."

"It wasn't easy after we played on Wednesday in Greece and the recovery was not easy. But we performed well today... I can't remember any clear chances for them, so I think we did well."

Manuel Akanji, Manchester City

"Phil [Foden] is so good with his back to goal, in the half spaces, the way that he turns on the ball."

Guardiola gets one over on Howe, again

Very few managers can say that they have the edge over Pep Guardiola, and Eddie Howe is certainly not one of them. Pep's record at the Etihad really is something to behold.

They were not at their scintillating best against Newcastle but they looked assured in their victory. City keep on rolling after their UEFA Super Cup triumph on Wednesday.

Manchester City get the job done with Alvarez strike

William Gittins
90+5

Full time at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City see out the final stages to pick up a second win from two Premier League games this season.

That's their 17th consecutive victory at the Etihad Stadium. Pep's team go marching on.

William Gittins
90+4

Final moments now and a last chance for Newcastle to snatch a point.

Guardiola gesticulates wildly. Howe stands, hands in pockets, as the seconds tick away.

William Gittins
90+3

City play the fee kick out wide to Grealish on the left wing, who takes great joy in winning a throw-in by flicking the ball into the shins of a Newcastle defender.

The ball comes back in and Haaland does the exact same thing. If anything, it looked like he enjoys it even more.

William Gittins
90+2

City are looking more assured now and appear to have quelled the threat of a late Newcastle charge. They knock the ball around the midfield fairly comfortably.

Kovacic draws a foul from Guimares and City can use up a few more seconds.

William Gittins
90

The fourth official announces that there will be five minutes of added time at the Etihad Stadium.

William Gittins
89

Chance! Foden

Another opening for Foden, who has been the best player on the pitch tonight.

The ball is on his right foot this time and his shot from a narrow angle zips just wide of the Newcastle goal.

William Gittins
87

Chance! Foden

The ball is worked through to Foden on the right side of the Newcastle box. Walker sprints forward on an overlapping run but Foden cuts inside onto his left foot and fires at goal.

The effort is blocked, and Walker is furious.

William Gittins
86

City are looking to take the sting out of the game now, putting their foot on the ball whenever possible.

Newcastle need to try to push up the pitch and close the space. City defenders have too much time on the ball at the moment.

William Gittins
85

It's Newcastle who make a change.

Almiron is replaced by Livramento for the final minutes. He makes his debut for his new club.

William Gittins
83

Bizarrely, City have not yet made a single substitute.

They played in sweltering conditions on Wednesday and have had another tough proposition against Newcastle today. It doesn't look like anyone is being readied on the City bench.

William Gittins
82

Walker has the ball on the right wing for City and looks to slow the game down for his team. City lose the ball and Kovacic puts in a clumsy tackle in the middle of the pitch.

Newcastle win the free kick.

William Gittins
80

Into the last ten minutes now and it does feel like there's at least one more goal to come here.

Newcastle are pushing more players forward in search of an equaliser. City and only too willing to surge forward on the counter-attack when their forays forward break down.

William Gittins
78

A Newcastle attack breaks down and and Foden has acres to space to surge into. He looks to play in Haaland but Newcastle block the pass and they're back on the attack.

It's getting stretch now, gaps beginning to appear.

William Gittins
75

We're into the last 15 minutes of normal time and Newcastle are very much in the game here.

They haven't created many clear cut chances but they are starting to push forward now. Can they manufacture an opening in the final stages?

William Gittins
73

Grealish gets flattened by a non-nonsense challenge from Trippier.

City win a free kick close to the left touchline, midway into the Newcastle half. A chance to deliver for Foden and Grealish.

William Gittins
71

A powerful run from Almiron brings Newcastle forward but the move breaks down and City are back on the attack.

Rodri looks to play forward but the attack slows down and Newcastle get numbers back in position.

William Gittins
69

Chance! Newcastle

A glorious chance for Newcastle as Wilson pinches the ball off Rodri 35 yards from goal.

For a moment Newcastle looked to have a two-on-one against Dias but the City man managed to get in a vital block.

That was a major opening for Newcastle.

William Gittins
68

Wilson looks to be offering more of an out-ball for Newcastle, running the channels well and looking to stretch the City defence.

William Gittins
66

Two more subs for Newcastle as Anderson and Wilson come on, replacing Isak and Tonali.

William Gittins
65

Half chance for Newcastle as the ball lands with Bruno Guimares on the edge of the City box. He takes a poor touch and drags his shot wide.

Newcastle subs incoming...

William Gittins
64

Close! Haaland

It's that combination again, Foden finding Haaland in the Newcastle box.

This time it's on Haaland's right and he hits it low and hard. Pope sticks out a boot to block the effort.

City are finding gaps in the Newcastle defence a little more easily now.

William Gittins
63

Chance! Haaland

Once again it's Foden  who makes things happen, darting through the Newcastle midfield.

He feeds the ball through to Haaland, who cuts back onto his left. You expect the net to bulge but the Norwegian's left-footed effort trickles wide of the Newcastle goal.

William Gittins
62

Free kick to Newcastle is played short, only for Burn to clip the ball aimlessly forward for Ederson to claim.

A waste of an opportunity for the visitors.

William Gittins
60

Kovacic has been everywhere in the City midfield in the first hour, given a license to roam forward once Akanji drifts into the middle.

Newcastle are struggling to get to grips with the wandering Croatian.

William Gittins
58

Chance! Haaland

Brilliant movement from Foden to make space for himself in the middle, poking the ball through for Haaland

For a second it looks like he's in on goal but Schar puts in a brilliant saving tackle. The ball bobbles clear to safety.

William Gittins
57

Harvey Barnes

Straight into the action, straight into the book.

It's an early yellow for the Newcastle substitute.

William Gittins
57

City are back on the ball and back on the attack. Rodri looks to slide in Haaland but Burn is there to cut out the pass.

William Gittins
56

Joelinton and Gordon are off, replaced by Sean Longstaff and Harvey Barnes.

William Gittins
55

Joelinton

It looks like the Newcastle midfielder sustained an injury in the process of that tackle. Subs incoming for newcastle now.

William Gittins
53

Joelinton

It's Newcastle midfielder Joelinton, who made the second tackle in the move, who picks up a booking.

Gordon's walking a tightrope now and it looks like he may soon be replaced by Barnes.

William Gittins
52

Big decision for the referee now after Anthony Gordon, who has already been booked, puts in a late challenge on Ruben Dias.

Let's see what happens...

William Gittins
50

Sweeper keeper Ederson is quick off his line to clear a long ball in behind.

William Gittins
48

Newcastle come forward again with Trippier on the right, who cross the ball from wide. It bounces around the City box until Gordon lashes the ball well over the crossbar.

William Gittins
47

Newcastle look to be starting a bit more on the front foot in the second half, looking to press City on the halfway line.

The visitors work the ball wide to Gordon on the left, who cut inside and lets fly. His effort striker his own man, Joelinton, and bounces out to safety.

William Gittins
46

Julian Alvarez

Early booking for the Manchester City goalscorer.

William Gittins
45

Newcastle get us back underway

We're back at it for the second half!

William Gittins

The players are emerging from the tunnel for the second half.

Will Newcastle be tempted to make a change at the break? They have looked fairly solid at the back but haven't offered much attacking threat.

Eddie Howe has the likes of Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes to call upon in the second half. Both were introduced midway through the second half last week, and both got on the scoresheet.

William Gittins

Phil Foden the difference-maker for City

Manchester City will need someone to stand up in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, and on tonight's evidence it looks like Phil Foden could be the man.

The 23-year-old has been at the centre of everything good for City so far and is finding gaps in between the Newcastle lines.

Julian Alvarez goal gives City the lead

It took a moment of quality to break the deadlock at the Etihad, and Julian Alvarez was the man to provide it.

Good play from Foden found Alvarez on the edge of the box and the Argentine fired expertly into the top corner. A brilliant finish that gave Pope no chance.

William Gittins
45+3

Half time at the Etihad

And that's all for the first half!

City have dominated the ball and found the breakthrough goal. Newcastle can take heart from a solid defensive display.

William Gittins
45+2

Guimares finds Almiron with a raking pass. Almiron plays it back to Tripper and the Englishman whips in a cross.

The balls lands at the feet of Gordon but he fails to get a strike away. City snuff out the opportunity and regain possession.

William Gittins
45+1

Newcastle enjoy a spell of possession to end the half, playing the ball nicely around the central third.

Can they fashion a late chance before the break?

William Gittins
45

We're going to have three minutes of added time at the Etihad Stadium.

William Gittins
44

Bursting run forward from Walker to tear across the pitch. He slips the ball to England teammate Grealish, who runs it to the byline and wins City a corner.

Newcastle clear the corner kick.

William Gittins
43

Pep Guardiola sits on a cooler on the touchline, right hand cradling his chin in a thoughtful pose.

The City boss is hard to please, but he must be pretty impressed with City's first half performance.

William Gittins
41

Chance! Haaland

Ederson plays an incredible 60-yard pass out to Alvarez on the left wing. He squares the ball to Foden, who plays a neat through ball to Haaland.

It's on his left foot but Haaland drags his effort just wide of the Newcastle goal. A near miss for Newcastle.

William Gittins
38

Pep screams for a foul as Akanji is upended in the middle of the pitch, but the Swiss defender manages to sweep the ball out to Walker. Newcastle are looking a bit more ambitious as we approach the halftime break.

William Gittins
36

City clear the ball but Newcastle work it back to Gordon on the wing. The ball is deflected out of play.

Momentary pause for a VAR check for a potential Kovacic handball. Nothing doing, we move on.

William Gittins
35

A foray forward from Almiron brings his team up the pitch, relieving the pressure on the Toon defence for a moment.

Joelinton is fouled by Rodri in the middle of the pitch and Newcastle look to swing it into the box.

William Gittins
34

A City free kick falls to Kovacic on the edge of the box. Once again the Croatian midfielder lets fly from distance and once again a Newcastle defender is there to block the effort.

William Gittins
32

It was a brilliant goal from Manchester City.

Foden, who is growing in influence, skipped into the right side of the Newcastle box and managed to pull the ball back to Alvarez. The Argentine was lurking on the edge and, after taking a touch to set himself, fired a right-footed effort into the far top corner.

The hosts take a deserved lead.

William Gittins

Alvarez stunner give City the lead

William Gittins
30

GOOOOAAAAL! Julian Alvarez

And there's the break through!

A brilliant finish from the World Cup winner to smash the ball into the top corner from 18 yards. No chance for Pope in the Newcastle goal.

William Gittins
30

City are really posing some questions now as both Grealish and Kovacic have shots from the edge of the box blocked.

Newcastle defend resolutely, but City's pressure is building.

William Gittins
28

Good play from Foden who sets Grealish running into space on the left wing. He fires in a low cross but Haaland had peeled off to the back post, allowing Botman to boot the ball clear.

William Gittins
27

Rodri picks up the ball 35 yards from the Newcastle goal and floats a ball to Walker on the right wing. There's a little too much on the pass and Walker can't quite reach it, but there was space in behind there.

William Gittins
24

There's an interesting game of cat and mouse unfolding on the City right/Newcastle left.

Both Walker and Gordon are looking to push up high and disrupt the other's natural game, leaving some big gaps in the opening stages. Walker is a real threat going forward but that looks like it could be an area for Newcastle to exploit.

William Gittins
23

Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)

The young Englishman gets the game's first booking for that tackle.

Dias is back on his feet and fine to continue.

William Gittins
22

Ruben Dias (Man City)

Gordan's challenge on the Portuguese defender is a little reckless, dragging his studs down the side of Dias' calf. The City man is down.

William Gittins
22

The ball's back with City now as the home crowd look to lift the intensity.

Grealish and Alvarez link up well on the left flank but Trippier is across to cover.

William Gittins
20

Isak gets the ball on the edge and holds it up well, under intense pressure. He works the ball to Joelinton but his right-footed shot is blocked by Akanji.

William Gittins
20

Rodri lobs a ball forward over the Newcastle defence and Trippier runs back to clear up the danger.

Twenty minutes in, Newcastle will probably be the happier of the two sides so far.

William Gittins
18

A bit of possession for Newcastle now, the first that they've had so far.

Guimares patrols just in front of the Newcastle backline, allowing Tonali and Joelinton to move further ahead and find pockets of space.

William Gittins
16

Newcastle get the ball up to Isak, who makes a brialliant turn in the middle of the pitch. He sends Gordan sweeping forward on the left and the Englishman sends in a tempting low cross.

No one there to connect for Newcastle, but a reminder of the quality that they have on the break.

William Gittins
15

Brilliant ball from Kovacic nearly set Haaland in on goal but it's a little ahead of him.

City are looking content just passing around the midfield, before trying to switch with a sudden direct pass. Hasn't quite come off yet, but they look dangerous.

William Gittins
13

Foden twists and turns in the box before laying it back to Akanji, ostensibly a defender but found lingering on the edge of the box. He fires well over.

William Gittins
11

Nearly an opening for Haaland as he nicks the ball off Newcastle on the edge of their own box. He exchanges a sharp one-two with Foden but can't quite latch on to the return pass.

Bit of a warning for Newcastle, there.

William Gittins
10

Newcastle United will be reasonably happy with the opening ten minutes at the Etihad, keeping City at arms length.

City have, of course, had the lion's share of possession, but Newcastle have looked organised in their defensive shape.

William Gittins
8

Grealish jinks in from the left wing and looks to fire in a shot with his right foot but England teammate Trippier is there to block his effort.

William Gittins
7

It looks like Dias and Gvardiol will form the central defensive duo when City are in possession, allowing Akanji to step into the midfield. Walker is playing high and wide on the right side.

William Gittins
6

Haaland looks to squeeze the ball through the Newcastle defence for the onrushing Foden, but Schar is there to block the pass. Fairly quiet on the pitch so far, but the City fans are in good voice.

William Gittins
3

We're back underway after a brief pause and Schar will indeed continue.

City are dominating possession in the early stages, with Foden playing close to Haaland in the central areas.

William Gittins
1

Schar (Newcastle United)

Early concern for the visitors as the big defender lands awkwardly after winning a header. Looks like he should be okay to continue.

William Gittins

And we're off!

The hosts kick off at the Etihad Stadium and get straight on the front foot with a long clearance from Ederson.

William Gittins

Decorations cleared and fireworks ceased, we're nearly ready for kick off between City and NEwcastle.

Incredible roar in the Etihad Stadium as the Manchester City fans welcome their treble-winning side out for the first home game of the new season.

There's a huge 'TREBLE WINNERS' flag draped across the pitch and fireworks were lit as the team stepped out onto the turf. Just moments to go until kick-off now.

William Gittins

Pep gives Kovacic and Alvarez chances from the start

Two players with something to prove for City - Mateo Kovacic and Julian Alvarez - will be looking to cement their places in the starting XI this season. The Croatian arrived from Chelsea this summer and is tasked with replacing Ilkay Gundogan; Alvarez looked good in his first season but it yet to nail down a starting berth.

Kick-off approaches at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City host Newcastle United in little over half an hour, in a game that will give a better sense of the quality of both sides. Both had fairly comfortable victories in their opening Premier League fixtures but now face a real test.

As reigning champions City will go into the game as favourites, but Newcastle are among the best teams in England at the moment. They qualified for the Champions League last season and have looked to push on with the signings of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes. Can they put down a marker against the European champions?

William Gittins

Newcastle boss delighted with Sandro Tonali debut

"He's settled in really well. He seems to have made an instant connection with the supporters and it reminds me of Bruno [Guimareas] when he arrived. When you get the love of the fans, it elevates you to a place you're not sure you would get to without it."

"They make you go to Asia or the United States to play against rivals or in derby games...and players suffer physically."

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City head coach

Manchester City return to Premier League action after securing their first piece of silverware of the season mid-week. Pep Guardiola's side beat Sevilla on penalties to lift the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in their history.

They went behind to the LaLiga side and struggled to break down their resolute defending. City needed a moment of magic from young winger Cole Palmer to drag themselves back into the tie, taking it to a penalty shoot out.

City scored all five of their spot kicks to lift the trophy. Can they carry that momentum into a tough clash with Newcastle? We're about to find out.
