Manchester City vs Newcastle United: As it happened
Manchester City secured an important win over Newcastle United with a fine first half strike from Julian Alvarez.
Pep Guardiola made changes to the team who beat Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, most notably Alvarez coming in for Cole Palmer on the right wing.
Palmer had been the scorer against Sevilla and it was Alvarez on the scoresheet this time, notching the only goal of the game. Midway through the first half the impressive Phil Foden darted into the Newcastle box before pulling the ball back to Alvarez, who was lurking on the edge of the box.
The Argentine forward took a touch, before rifling a right-footed effort past Nick Pope and into the top corner.
City, and Foden in particular, fashioned other half chances in the second half but neither side came particularly close to the back of the net.
The hosts were able to see out the win and the Etihad erupted in celebration on the final whistle as Manchester City began their home campaign with a hard-fought win.

Guardiola gets one over on Howe, again
Very few managers can say that they have the edge over Pep Guardiola, and Eddie Howe is certainly not one of them. Pep's record at the Etihad really is something to behold.
They were not at their scintillating best against Newcastle but they looked assured in their victory. City keep on rolling after their UEFA Super Cup triumph on Wednesday.

The effort is blocked, and Walker is furious.
City are looking to take the sting out of the game now, putting their foot on the ball whenever possible.
Newcastle need to try to push up the pitch and close the space. City defenders have too much time on the ball at the moment.
It's Newcastle who make a change.
Almiron is replaced by Livramento for the final minutes. He makes his debut for his new club.
Bizarrely, City have not yet made a single substitute.

Newcastle win the free kick.
Into the last ten minutes now and it does feel like there's at least one more goal to come here.

Half chance for Newcastle as the ball lands with Bruno Guimares on the edge of the City box. He takes a poor touch and drags his shot wide.
Newcastle subs incoming...
Close! Haaland
It's that combination again, Foden finding Haaland in the Newcastle box.
This time it's on Haaland's right and he hits it low and hard. Pope sticks out a boot to block the effort.
City are finding gaps in the Newcastle defence a little more easily now.
Chance! Haaland
Once again it's Foden who makes things happen, darting through the Newcastle midfield.
He feeds the ball through to Haaland, who cuts back onto his left. You expect the net to bulge but the Norwegian's left-footed effort trickles wide of the Newcastle goal.
Free kick to Newcastle is played short, only for Burn to clip the ball aimlessly forward for Ederson to claim.
A waste of an opportunity for the visitors.
Kovacic has been everywhere in the City midfield in the first hour, given a license to roam forward once Akanji drifts into the middle.
Newcastle are struggling to get to grips with the wandering Croatian.
Chance! Haaland
Brilliant movement from Foden to make space for himself in the middle, poking the ball through for Haaland.

Straight into the action, straight into the book.

Eddie Howe has the likes of Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes to call upon in the second half. Both were introduced midway through the second half last week, and both got on the scoresheet.
Phil Foden the difference-maker for City
Manchester City will need someone to stand up in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, and on tonight's evidence it looks like Phil Foden could be the man.
The 23-year-old has been at the centre of everything good for City so far and is finding gaps in between the Newcastle lines.

It was a brilliant goal from Manchester City.
Foden, who is growing in influence, skipped into the right side of the Newcastle box and managed to pull the ball back to Alvarez. The Argentine was lurking on the edge and, after taking a touch to set himself, fired a right-footed effort into the far top corner.
The hosts take a deserved lead.
GOOOOAAAAL! Julian Alvarez
And there's the break through!

City are really posing some questions now as both Grealish and Kovacic have shots from the edge of the box blocked.

Rodri picks up the ball 35 yards from the Newcastle goal and floats a ball to Walker on the right wing. There's a little too much on the pass and Walker can't quite reach it, but there was space in behind there.
There's an interesting game of cat and mouse unfolding on the City right/Newcastle left.
Both Walker and Gordon are looking to push up high and disrupt the other's natural game, leaving some big gaps in the opening stages. Walker is a real threat going forward but that looks like it could be an area for Newcastle to exploit.
Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)
The young Englishman gets the game's first booking for that tackle.
Dias is back on his feet and fine to continue.
Ruben Dias (Man City)

No one there to connect for Newcastle, but a reminder of the quality that they have on the break.
Brilliant ball from Kovacic nearly set Haaland in on goal but it's a little ahead of him.
City are looking content just passing around the midfield, before trying to switch with a sudden direct pass. Hasn't quite come off yet, but they look dangerous.
Foden twists and turns in the box before laying it back to Akanji, ostensibly a defender but found lingering on the edge of the box. He fires well over.
Nearly an opening for Haaland as he nicks the ball off Newcastle on the edge of their own box. He exchanges a sharp one-two with Foden but can't quite latch on to the return pass.
Bit of a warning for Newcastle, there.
Newcastle United will be reasonably happy with the opening ten minutes at the Etihad, keeping City at arms length.
City have, of course, had the lion's share of possession, but Newcastle have looked organised in their defensive shape.
Grealish jinks in from the left wing and looks to fire in a shot with his right foot but England teammate Trippier is there to block his effort.
It looks like Dias and Gvardiol will form the central defensive duo when City are in possession, allowing Akanji to step into the midfield. Walker is playing high and wide on the right side.

We're back underway after a brief pause and Schar will indeed continue.
City are dominating possession in the early stages, with Foden playing close to Haaland in the central areas.

Decorations cleared and fireworks ceased, we're nearly ready for kick off between City and NEwcastle.
