Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City will be desperate to get back to winning ways after their derby defeat to Manchester United on Saturday saw them fall eight points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the table. Tottenham Hotspur were well beaten by the Gunners on Sunday and have dropped off the pace in the race for a Champions League spot; a victory at the Etihad would be most welcome for Antonio Conte’s men.

Manchester City vs Tottenham preview

Kevin De Bruyne a Manchester City doubt to face Tottenham

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola launched into a fairly astonishing rant after his team’s defeat to Manchester United, saying that he “didn’t care about the Premier League” and that “we won a lot, so it’s not a problem.” Read into that what you will. Now that we are no longer in the heat of the moment, the former Barcelona boss will be plotting a way for his side to make up the eight-point deficit to league leaders Arsenal. City have now lost their last two matches – they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Southampton three days before their derby loss – but have won 18 of their last 20 competitive home games. Playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is an injury doubt for the clash despite playing the full 90 minutes against United. John Stones has sat out the last two games and may not be rushed back but fellow defender Ruben Dias should be involved for the first time since the World Cup.

Five defeats in nine Premier League games for Antonio Conte’s Tottenham

While it might be a step too far to say Tottenham are in crisis, things haven’t been going well for the London site of late. After a fine start to the season, which included five wins and two draws in their first seven Premier League matches, they’ve lost five of the last nine, a run of form which has seen them drop down to fifth spot in the table, five points off the top four. Not only did they lose 2-0 to bitter rivals Arsenal on Sunday but the manner of the defeat will have been especially concerning for boss Antonio Conte, whose side barely laid a glove on their opponents. Winger Lucas Moura is the only confirmed absentee for the trip to Manchester, with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur in contention for a return to action after a groin issue.
