Manchester United are in a rich vein of form and possibly only Marcus Rashford epitomises this more than David De Gea. The Red Devils consider that the best thing for him to do is continue at the club, but his age forces the board to think about his future, both in terms of the squad level but also financially.

According to The Sun, the club wants De Gea to take a paycut from the current 375,000 pounds per week to 250,000 pounds. Both seem willing to reach an understanding to renew a contract that has just over four months to go until it expires.

Who would replace De Gea at Manchester United?

This newspaper also ensures that Manchester United are looking to the future and they have a new first choice in mind. The previous successor, Dean Henderson, has given up trying to compete for a place at Old Trafford and has instead opted to prove his worth during two loan spells (Sheffield United and currently Nottingham Forest).

Henderson is willing to leave permanently to play as a regular starter and fight for a place in the national team. Therefore, the new candidate to ensure the future of the Old Trafford goal is Illan Meslier, of Leeds United.

Manchester monitor Meslier

This newspaper claims that Manchester United are monitoring the goalkeeper and consider him the perfect option for the future, but wants him to arrive at the right time, when they can offer him the starting position. In the offices they are aware of the risks of Leeds’ possible relegation that could force The Whites to sell their goalkeeper, who would like to continue in the first division. Leeds are second bottom after losing to Everton and play bottom of the league Southampton next week.

De Gea is Ten Hag’s number one

Since his arrival, Erik Ten Hag has relied on De Gea as the clear starter in his attempt to bring about change at Manchester United. He has only rotated in goal in the EFL Cup, where he played just one match in between Dubravka and Heaton. At this point in the season, De Gea has played 33 games and almost 3,000 minutes. The team have kept a clean sheet in 14 games and have conceded 35 goals in all competitions.
