Manchester United is already plotting a major summer transfer spree. The Red Devils are expected to invest over $230 million to replace Casemiro, who announced he will not renew his contract after the World Cup, leaving a key hole in the midfield.

Despite recent resurgence under Michael Carrick, United is thinking long-term. The club has been competitive in what could be the final campaigns of several legends, with Casemiro among them. Replacing a player of his stature will come at a steep price.

A blank check for Casemiro’s successors

The hunt is on for an “irreplaceable” midfielder, a player capable of leaving a lasting legacy. United officials say they are prepared to make a significant investment just to fill Casemiro’s boots, estimating a budget of more than $230 million for the role, although that figure would ideally see them recruit up to three players. The shortlist shares one key trait: Premier League experience and proven quality in England.

High-profile targets

Leading United’s wishlist are three names: Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson. Further down, but still in the mix, are Adam Wharton and João Gomes. These players are seen as both present and future options to help United reclaim a title challenge, though none come cheap or easy to sign.

Guimarães and Tonali are central figures for their current club. Guimarães, despite being sidelined with an injury, is viewed by United as a foundational player for the future, with Casemiro himself reportedly recommending his signing. Newcastle United is negotiating a contract extension with Guimarães, making a transfer complicated.

Tonali, meanwhile, could be tempted to return to Italy - Juventus is interested but currently cannot afford him - but staying in the Premier League and joining a “Big Six” club is increasingly likely.

United has made informal contact with the players’ representatives, but nothing is agreed with the clubs. Newcastle would likely only allow one of the two to leave. Known as tough negotiators, the Magpies proved their bargaining power with the historic $165 million transfer of Alexander Isak last summer. Any deal for either player would likely surpass that figure.

Rising stars and alternatives

Elliot Anderson is another strong candidate. United has pursued the Nottingham Forest midfielder since last summer. Despite Forest’s struggles, Anderson has impressed, even overtaking Jude Bellingham in national recognition. Club insiders see him as a potential cornerstone for the present and future, with his price dependent on whether Forest stays in the Premier League next season.

Further down the list are Adam Wharton and João Gomes. Wharton has shone in London but will leave Crystal Palace after the World Cup. He has previously been linked to clubs like Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

João Gomes, with Wolves facing relegation, is hoping for a call from Old Trafford. His future may point to Serie A unless United makes a final push, and Casemiro reportedly supports this potential signing as well.
