Manchester United - Liverpool summary: score, goals, highlights, Premier League

Premier League: Manchester United - Liverpool live updates

Full-time thoughts: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool

How Liverpool weren’t out of sight after the first half, I’ll never know. After a bright opening 10 minutes for United, Jürgen Klopp’s side broke into dangerous areas time and again, with little resistance from the hosts.

But The Reds only had Luis Díaz’s volley from a corner to show for their dominance, with Szoboszlai missing the best of the other opportunities, and Onana making a couple of fairly routine stops from Salah, who was quiet despite his team’s superiority.

Ten Hag’s men couldn’t possibly be as passive in the second half and they weren’t, although they needed a huge helping hand from their opponents to get back into the match. Quansah carelessly gave the ball away to Fernandes, who fired a speculative strike over Kelleher from inside the centre circle.

That inevitably galvanised United, although they still had a few scares to deal with at the back. Liverpool continued to waste good openings and were made to pay as Mainoo curled a brilliant effort into the far corner.

Salah missed a great chance to level from close range but then levelled from the penalty spot after Wan-Bissaka’s senseless lunge on Elliot in the box.

Liverpool salvaged a point but will feel they should have had more. Having held a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League for several weeks, they are now level on points with Arsenal, the new leaders on goal difference.

Second-half improvement earns United a point

Considering United had a grand total of zero shots in the first half, they were considerably better in the second. Still, a missed opportunity for Liverpool, who created far more.

United's Champions League hopes hanging by a threat

United can't afford to drop many points as they look to finish in the top four (or five). A draw against Liverpool isn't necessary a bad result in isolation, but they could lose more ground if Spurs win later on Sunday. And they are already far enough behind as it is.

Full-time: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool

It's all over! What a game! Liverpool will be kicking themselves!

Onana saves from Elliot!

From the free-kick, the ball drops to Elliot, who fires through a crowd and into the arms of Onana!

Casemiro yellow card

Sometimes I wonder what goes through Casemiro's head. He's launched into a tackle on Díaz, got a yellow card and given away a free kick in a really dangerous situation.

Kelleher saves from Antony!

Almost a late winner for United! Hojlund finds the run of Antony, whose low strike is saved by Kelleher!

as.com
90+4

Almost a chance for United! Antony leads the charge and Fernandes nearly picks a pass for Hojlund in the box, only for it to be cut out.

Huge chance for Díaz!

That was it! Robertson nods the ball across goal for Díaz, who's only six yards out but half-volleys over!

It's attack against defence at the moment. Can Liverpool create one more chance?

Mount booked

Mount next in the book for a classic tactical foul on Gakpo.

It's hard to see the hosts getting a winner at this stage.

A sigh of relief for United as Maguire is fouled in his own box at Robertson's corner.

Jones booked for Liverpool

Jones sees yellow for chopping down Amrabat, who's just come on for Garnacho.

86

I honestly don't know what United are playing at. Onana and Maguire decide to play a goal kick short when there are Liverpool players at close quarters. The latter kicks if straight out for a throw-in.

as.com
85

Oooft, that looks a sore one for both Dalot and Díaz. In trying to keep the ball in near the goal line, they career off the field and into the advertising boards.

United have conceded a lot of late goals recently. Liverpool will fancy this.

Onana gets a yellow card for taking too long over a goal kick.

Huge miss from Salah!

That should be 2-2! Onana makes a good stop from Díaz but the ball falls straight to Salah, who blazes over on his right foot when he should've scored!

as.com
78

Liverpool are starting to get some control back, which is ominous for United.

as.com
77

More resolute defending from Kambwala as he heads Elliot's dangerous cross away under pressure from two Liverpool players.

as.com
76

That could've gone anywhere! Gomez runs onto a high ball on the edge of the box and his volley clips Maguire but goes straight to the grateful Onana.

as.com

15 minutes to go. Can Liverpool rescue something?

as.com
73

Klopp furious on the touchline

Kambwala goes in hard on Gomez, with studs slightly showing. Klopp is furious down on the touchline, but there's no yellow card - or worse - to go with the free-kick.

as.com
73

Kelleher saves from Garnacho!

Good hold-up play from Hojlund, who waits and waits for help and plays in Garnacho, whose strike is saved by Kelleher.

as.com
72

Excellent defending from Kambwala to pick the ball off Díaz, who looked to get in behind. He's done well so far.

as.com
70

Onana takes big risk!

Oh my word. The ball is played back to Onana, who thinks he's prime Messi as he sidesteps Cody Gakpo. It came off, just as well for him...

as.com

If nothing else, United are definitely putting themselves about more and Liverpool under more pressure in this half.

Old Trafford, you won't be surprised to hear, is rocking.

Liverpool double substitution

Elliot and Gakpo on. Endo and Núñez off.

Rashford down for United

Rashford has dropped to the deck and it doesn't look as if he's going to be able to carry on.

as.com
62

Fernandes makes a great run into the box and is almost picked out by Dalot. Just too much on it, and Kelleher collects.

as.com

For all that United have been a bit better in the second half, they are still incredibly open in midfield and out on the flanks. There are more goals in it for Liverpool, no doubt.

as.com
61

That was a HUGE tackle from Quanash. It looked as if Rashford was about to skip past him and bear down on goal, but no!

Fernandes to the rescue for United

One shot. One goal. That's all it takes.

Rashford clips another dangerous ball into the back post and Kelleher collects it with rather less trouble than the last one. That all started from a BEAUTIFUL piece of control from Dalot, which even took Díaz by surprise.

Liverpool are back on the front foot. More desperate defending keeps Mac Allister and Salah at bay.

Núñez squanders another Liverpool chance

Garnacho gives it away and Liverpool break, with Núñez prodding wide at the back post after Díaz had rolled the ball across goal. Another good chance...

Garnacho shot deflected over!

Mainoo charges forward and Garnacho's shot is deflected over for a corner!

as.com

Let's see if that gives United a lift....

as.com

Liverpool only have themselves (and Quansah) to blame. That was completely of their own doing.

Half-time thoughts: Manchester United 0-1 Liverpool

United raced out of the traps and had the ball in the net after just a minute, although Garnacho was clearly offside as he got on the end of Hojlund’s pass.

The hosts continued their bright start for the first 10 minutes or so, then Liverpool took complete control.

Since then, it has been one-way traffic and Jürgen Klopp’s side should really have more to show for it than Luis Díaz’s volley from a corner.

Szoboszlai has been especially threatening arriving in the box from deep, while Robertson has faced virtually no resistance breaking forward on the left flank.

While The Reds haven’t created too many clear-cut chances, they have had a huge number of openings and ventures into the United box.

Will they regret not being further ahead? The hosts surely can't be as passive in the second half...

United surrendering chances and creating nothing

Not everyone is an expected goals (xG) fan, and it has its drawbacks. But it can also give you a rough idea as to the quality of the chances created by the two teams.

Absolutely nothing from United. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Liverpool, meanwhile, haven't had many clear-cut chances but lots of reasonable openings.

Half-time: Manchester United 0-1 Liverpool

Luis Díaz's volley from a corner is all that separates the teams, but there has been a huge gulf in quality in general play.

as.com
45+1

This is incredible. It's so easy for Liverpool to get into the United box. Szoboszlai touches the ball off for Bradley, whose shot is blocked before it reaches Onana.

as.com
45

Two extra minutes to be played.

as.com
45

Onana saves again from Núñez

ANOTHER chance for Liverpool! Núñez gets in behind again and shoots, with Onana touching the ball to safety.

Ah, offside...

as.com

To make matters worse for United, they've given the ball away incredible cheaply the last two times they've had it.

as.com
43

Salah curls a cross in from the right for Núñez but doesn't quite pick out his teammate, with Onana able to gather.

as.com

It has been chance after chance for Liverpool in the last 30-35 minutes. Will they live to regret not being further ahead?

as.com
41

Dalot denies Díaz!

Núñez dummies Bradley's square pass for Díaz, who looks certain to score from the penalty spot but hits Dalot.

as.com
40

Maguire has just kept the ball for about 10 seconds, purely because he had no options for a pass. A stark contrast to Liverpool.

as.com
39

Kambwala rattles into Díaz, who goes down. It was a fair challenge from the young defender, and something United need a bit more of, I'd suggest. They've not got anywhere near their opponents for most of the first half.

as.com
38

Liverpool have dropped the pace a bit in the last minute or two, which is giving their opponents some respite.

as.com

Liverpool are breaking into the final third at will. There's almost no resistance from United at the moment.

as.com
35

Salah fires over!

And another one...

Robertson and Szoboszlai combine to tee up Salah, who shoots well, well, over. Poor from a man who normally does better.

as.com
34

Núñez shoots just over!

United are dodging bullets here. Núñez is latest to try his luck, shooting just over from the edge of the box.

as.com
33

Onana saves from Salah x 2

From almost the same position, Onana makes almost the same save from the same man!

as.com
32

Onana saves from Salah!

There he is! Díaz drives forward and slides a pass to the unmarked Salah, whose shot across goal is touched away by Onana.

as.com
28

Kambwala's vital recovery

Kambwala almost lets Núñez in but makes a great last-ditch challenge to stop the Uruguayan as he bore down on goal.

as.com
27

Núñez is down after Garnacho trods on his foot. It looked accidental, but it was excellent defensive work by the Liverpool striker.

as.com
26

Big chance for United!

From that free kick, United could - and maybe should - be level! Fernandes curls the ball in for Casemiro, who nods across goal, with the ball somehow evading everyone!

as.com
26

A breakaway for United leads to a foul in Liverpool's attacking third, but there was a lovely little feint in there by Fernandes to draw the free kick from Mac Allister.

as.com
23

Liverpool are having plenty of joy down their left. Dalot doesn't know which white and green shirt to go to, at the moment.

as.com

Onana got a slight touch on it but couldn't keep it out. Should he have done? Maybe.

as.com
22

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL LIVERPOOL! DÍAZ!

From the corner, Núñez flicks on Robertson's delivery and Díaz volleys first time into the net!

as.com
21

Endo looks to pick out Salah's darting run in behind Wan-Bissaka, who does just enough to take it away from the Egyptian.

as.com
19

Robertson shoots well wide

Robertson is starting to have an impact in attack. He drives forward and this time decides to shoot, although he probably wishes he hadn't...

as.com
17

Szoboszlai shoots wide!

That's a good opening for Szoboszlai, though! Robertson has space on the left and picks out the midfielder, who shoots wide first time from a good position in the box!

as.com
17

Casemiro thunders into Szoboszlai!

Szoboszlai lines one up from range but is brilliantly stopped in his tracks by the sliding Casemiro.

as.com
16

Fernandes goes down in the box but was offside. His first little tantrum of the game. I suspect it won't be the last...

as.com
15

Much better there from United, though! Rashford bounces on a loose ball in midfield and plays Hojlund through, although the striker can't get away from the Liverpool defence, who crowd him out.

as.com
15

United attempt to play out from the back but get as far as Dalot, who is then forced to chip the ball up towards Hojlund, who can't get a hold of it.

as.com
14

The complexion of this game has totally changed. United, after a lightning start, can't get out.

as.com
12

A vital interception from Dalot stops Núñez from exploiting a huge space in the middle of the United defence!

as.com
12

Liverpool have stemmed the flow of United attacks and have had much more control in the last couple of minutes.

as.com
10

Szoboszlai fires over!

The corner eventually comes to Salah, whose layoff to Szoboszlai is swept over the bar by the Hungarian.

as.com
9

As soon as I say that, Liverpool threaten! Núñez gets in behind on the right, chips the ball up for Salah, whose first-time volley is blocked out for a corner by Mainoo.

as.com

Ten Hag will definitely be the happier manager so far. Early days, however.

as.com
7

That earlier corner came to nothing, but Onana then almost picked out Hojlund with a superb long ball over the top of the defence. Van Dijk to the rescue again.

as.com
6

Liverpool's Bradley booked

Conor Bradley has already been booked for a late challenge on Rashford in midfield.

as.com
5

It's been a really good start for United. Garnacho gets past Robertson and crosses, with Van Dijk forced to clear for a corner.

as.com
4

Núñez threatens to break away for Liverpool, but slips on his backside as he tries to take on Maguire, who was the last defender. Whoops.

as.com

Dalot and Garnacho, by the way, are playing on the right, with Wan-Bissaka and Rashford on the left.

as.com

A breathless beginning. Keep it going, please!

as.com
2

Onana saves from Szoboszlai!

Wow! An electric opening! Szoboszlai gets on the end of a brilliant Salah pass and shoots across Onana, who makes a fine stop!

Who has won more league titles, Manchester United or Liverpool?

United have had a decade of disaster but are still the most successful team in England when it comes to league titles. Sir Alex Ferguson's last few years at the club (up until 2013) saw The Red Devils overtake Liverpool at the top of that particular tree.

United have won 20 English top-flight titles (13 in the Premier League era), compared to Liverpool's 19 (one Premier League).

Despite Jürgen Klopp's success at Anfield and the plaudits he's received, he has just one league title to his name, which he'll be desperate to add to before leaving in the summer.

United beat Liverpool in FA Cup quarter-final classic

In among those United and Liverpool results, you'll have noticed a 4-3 win (after extra time) for The Red Devils in the FA Cup quarter-finals, which took place at Old Trafford just 21 days ago. Klopp's side were 2-1 ahead at half-time and dominated the early part of the second half, but were made to pay for not finishing the game off.

Manchester United somehow lose Chelsea thriller

Just three days ago, Manchester United somehow managed to lose to Chelsea when it seemed as if they were home and dry.

Two goals inside the first 20 minutes from Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer initially put The Blues in control but United had turned things around by the midway point of the second half thanks to an Alejandro Garnacho double either side of a Bruno Fernandes header.

Erik Ten Hag’s team held their lead until the ninth minute of injury time and were hit by two devastating sucker punches. Palmer converted his second penalty of the game to draw Chelsea level and still had to time to fire in a deflected winner on 100 minutes and 39 seconds, the latest winning goal on record in the Premier League.

Liverpool locked in Premier League title race with Manchester City and Arsenal

Remember the last time there were three teams in a Premier League title race this late in the season? No, me neither.

With Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal regularly playing at different times, there have been plenty of “over to you” moments in the last few weeks. The Reds and The Gunners have traded places from one day to the next, with City lurking in the background, waiting to pounce.

As it stands, Klopp’s boys are level with City and a point behind Arsenal after they beat Brighton yesterday. A win at Old Trafford, however, will move them back to the top of the table with seven matches to go for all three teams.

How many Premier League teams will qualify for the 2024/25 Champions League?

The million dollar question. Here’s the lowdown on why Manchester United (and a number of others) don’t yet know what they need to do to clinch a Champions League place next season.

Can Manchester United still qualify for the Champions League?

It seems unlikely. We still don’t know if four or five English teams will qualify for next season’s new and improved (ahem) Champions League, but I don’t think’s going to matter for The Red Devils.

It’s hard to make a case for them finishing in the top four or five. They’ve lost (12) almost as many games as they’ve won (15) and have conceded more goals (44) than they’ve scored (43) in 30 matches. Hardly the sign of a team that’s going to win their last eight league fixtures, which they might need to do.

What time does Manchester United against Liverpool kick off?

The game in Manchester gets underway at 3:30 p.m. local time, which is 10:30 a.m. ET and 7:30 a.m. PT. What better way to start a Sunday with a Premier League classic (not that I’m tempting fate or anything)?

Hello and welcome to live text coverage of Manchester United - Liverpool!

Hello and welcome to AS USA’s live text coverage of Manchester United against bitter rivals Liverpool. These two really don’t like each other very much and the stakes are incredibly high, with Jürgen Klopp’s side gunning for the Premier League title and The Red Devils desperate to stop them.

I'm Roddy and thanks for joining me. This should be good!
