Manchester United player Mason Greenwood arrested for alleged bail breach

Greenwood was arrested in January on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

Footballer Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of breaching his bail conditions. According to reports in the Sun, he was arrested at his home in Greater Manchester on Saturday morning following reports he tried to contact his alleged victim.

“Greater Manchester police are aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions and an arrest has been made on Saturday 15 October 2022,” a statement read. “Enquiries are ongoing at this time.”

Greenwood, who was originally arrested in January on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman, before being further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill, has been on bail since February 2.

The 21-year-old has remained suspended by Manchester United since the allegations came to light but he is still receiving a £75,000 a week salary. His profile was never removed from the official United website, although he is not currently a member of the squad while the legal process is ongoing. He has also been removed from various video games and his sponsors have cut all ties, including Nike.

Greenwood charged

Greenwood has been charged with “attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm”, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. His first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court.
