Considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during the last decade or so, Manuel Neuer seems to have found his second wind at Euro 2024. Germany, who dream of winning the tournament on home soil, are through to the quarter finals where they will face Spain. It will also most likely be the Bayern Munich goalkeeper’s last appearance in the competition and his last chance to win it.

Neuer about to enter the final year of his contract at Bayern

With a contract valid until the summer of 2025 with Bayern Munich, Neuer remains calm about his future and is focusing solely on the present in which his plan to to win a second trophy with the Mannschaft - adding to the World Cup, his only title, won in 2014.

In an interview with German media this week, the 38-year-old keeper spoke about his future, ensuring that at the moment he feels comfortable where he is at the moment. Neuer has ruled out a move to the Middle East but believes that the MLS could be a possible next destinations after hearing about the experiences from friends such Bastian Schweinsteiger

“I have always had inquiries from clubs and offers,” the keeper says. “But I knew that Bayern Munich was the best place for me because of the atmosphere and the squad… although it has to be said: I would not move to Saudi Arabia or Qatar… In everything case, the MLS would be an option. I spoke about it with Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played there. But you have to think about it carefully. Also because there they play a lot on artificial grass, which is not ideal for a goalkeeper,” Neuer explained in a conversation with Welt Sport.

Neuer wants to expand his international record of achievements

A world champion with Germany in 2014, Neuer has the chance to finally win one of the few trophies that has evaded him. He has won everything there is to win at club level with Bayern, including 11 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues. Winning the Euros was within reach twice when Germany made it to the semi-finals in 2012 and 2016, only to be eliminated by Italy and France respectively.

At the previous tournament in 2021, Germany crashed out to England in the Round of 16.

Winning Euro 2024 with Germany as the host nation would be the perfect way to begin the end of a cycle, which he hopes to prolong until 2026 at the World Cup in the United States. He will be 40 years of age when that comes along, and with any luck, competing in his fifth World Cup.
