Marcelo reveals why son Enzo chose Spain over Brazil as Real Madrid prospect’s rise continues

The 16-year-old Real Madrid academy standout is already starring for Spain’s U-17 team as Brazil keeps close tabs on him.

Marcelo was a legend for both Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team. Now, his son Enzo Alves Vieira appears to be following a similar path, although with one major twist.

Speaking with former teammate Iker Casillas, the ex-Brazil international opened up about the future he envisions for his oldest son, who has already emerged as one of the most closely watched prospects in Real Madrid’s academy system.

“Enzo was born in Spain, his life is here,” Marcelo explained. “He loves Brazil, but everything he knows is here, and the Spanish national team treated us incredibly well. They contacted us, explained the project, and what matters most is that he’s happy.”

One of Real Madrid’s most talked-about young talents

At just 16 years old, Enzo is already generating major buzz. Nearly everything he does attracts attention, but the hype is being backed up on the field.

The young forward, who uses his mother’s surname professionally, continues to pile up goals both for Real Madrid’s youth teams and for Spain’s U-17 national side. Just weeks ago, he helped Spain win the Algarve International Tournament, scoring twice during the competition.

Now, European Championship and World Cup appearances with Spain’s youth setup appear firmly on the horizon, and there seems to be little uncertainty about where his international future lies.

Spain has moved aggressively to secure some of the game’s brightest dual-nationality talents in recent years, and Enzo has clearly become part of that long-term vision.

Brazil still monitoring the situation

Even if Enzo appears committed to Spain, Brazil has not taken its eyes off him.

The Brazilian federation continues monitoring his development in case an opportunity to convince him emerges down the road. Still, Spain’s soccer federation has built a strong reputation for recruiting and developing elite young talent with multinational backgrounds.

Players such as Eliezer Mayenda, Mateo Joseph, Dean Huijsen and Samu have all become examples of Spain’s increasingly successful recruitment strategy.

Enzo, who has been part of Real Madrid’s famed academy system, La Fábrica, since 2017, signed his first professional contract with the club this January.

Despite his age, he is already making waves with Real Madrid Juvenil B.

“Happy to sign my first professional contract! Hala Madrid!” the teenager posted on Instagram after putting pen to paper.

Marcelo celebrates his son’s milestone

Marcelo also celebrated the achievement publicly, sharing an emotional message on social media that drew praise from several soccer stars and former teammates, including Vinícius Júnior, Casillas, Júlio César and Ángel Di María.

So proud of you, my son. You deserve all of this. Congratulations! I love you. We keep moving forward, strong as ever.
